Three Little Jewells

Easter 2012

Easter Celebration 2012

Unfortunately, in all the business of preparing for Easter, I did not get a picture of some of the fun things we did leading up to Easter.    Here are a few of the things we did that I did not get pictures of:

-12 days of Resurrection Eggs

-On Good Friday we darkened the house by closing all the curtains & blinds, hanging blankets over some doorways, etc.   We ate a special dinner by candlelight to commemorate the Earth falling dark for 3 hours after the death of Christ.

-Read the Easter story out loud from the Bible.

-On Easter morning we had Hot Cross Buns and Resurrection Rolls for breakfast.

-After church on Easter morning, we invited all of our family over, and Mr. Hicks, our piano teacher, for an afternoon of games & dinner.   I got picture of the games but none of dinner.   We had a  beautiful table set with fresh flowers and little wooden crosses at each plate.

Coloring Eggs

Planting Magic Jelly Beans- This is a fun new tradition that we are starting this year.   The night before Easter we give the kids “magic” jelly beans to plant out in the yard.   I wonder what will happen??  :)

Look how big Lyra is!!  I can hardly stand it…

Nice picture of the two big girls!

Sunday, April 8

Easter morning they woke up to their baskets at the table.   They each got a small gift from Daddy & Mommy (sticker books) and in their baskets they had a hollow chocolate bunny, a large hollow egg & some small chocolate eggs.

Lyra was the very first one into her candy- she did not waste ANY time diving into the chocolate!

Inside the eggs were little chocolate bits of candy.

Easter morning- ready to go to Church!

Easter afternoon- waiting for everyone to arrive!

Uncle Bob is stealing the baby’s candy!!!    Paw Paw & Mimi (Kip’s parents) always bring Easter baskets for the kids each year- they are full of candy & little toys.    It is *so* sweet of them to do this!

They even brought a “basket” for Alec!

Easter Egg Hunt- we waited until the afternoon to do this so that the grandparents and other family members could participate.

EEEK!! Look what happened overnight!!!   The magic jelly beans grew into great big striped lollipops!!!

Paw Paw & Mimi helping Savvy hunt for eggs.

After the egg hunt, we got out the stomp rocket and all took turns.  Here’s Uncle Bob’s super jump with Kip & Alec behind him.

Alec’s jump!

Look at Sarah go!!!

Nathan, holding his lollipop, and jumping.   Bob & Sarah setting up ladderball in the background.

Ladderball!   Mr. Hicks, our piano teacher, on the right.

Mary, celebrating a successful throw!

Uncle Bob is not thrilled with Savvy’s kiss…  To chocolatey, perhaps?

When I switched formats on the blog, I somehow lost all of my house pictures.   So I’m starting a new post with pictures & will add to this one occasionally.

Summer Fun List 2012

Summer Fun List 2012

I had so much fun planning this last year and I actually finished most of the items on our list!   Time to start a new one…

1. Lemonade stand (and maybe a bake sale too?)

2. Picnic at Pisgah Covered Bridge

3. Field trip to Horne Creek Historic Farm.

4. Chick-Fil-A Dress Like A Cow Day

5.  Invite friends over for a bubbles & popsicles day

6. Day trip to Lexington, NC and/or Mt. Airy, NC

7. Day trip to Salisbury, NC

8. Family Reunion

Lyra in overalls

3/31- This reminds me of a picture Gramma Mary used to have of two little boys wearing overalls- they were leaning towards each other, kind of like the pose Lyra has below, saying “You been farmin’ long?”   Good heavens she is cute, cute, cute!

The Scientist

Nathan the Scientist

3/31:  If Nathan had his way, he’d spend hours with his Primary Science Set every day.  Unfortunately for him, we don’t have as much time to do this as he would like.   Finally, on a Saturday that Kip took Mary & Savannah to work, Nathan had several hours all to himself to play with his science set.    He mixed water, olive oil, vinegar & food coloring.   Added salt & pepper.  Tested whether various items floated or sank.    Then he put it all in the freezer and has been playing with it all week long whenever he gets the time.

Gettysburg

The Battle for Little Round Top

April 3, 2012:  As I mentioned earlier, we are studying the Civil War.   We’ve read about the battle for Gettysburg, watched a clip from the movie “Gods and Generals” about the smaller battle for Little Round Top (within the larger battle of Gettysburg) and listened to an audio recording of actor Jeff Daniels reading President Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address and visited the Confederate Arms exhibit at our local history museum.     Karen Andreola, who often writes about the Charlotte Mason method of classical education, writes that children should have “something to think about, something to do and something to love”.   One thing I love about our history curriculum is that it definitely gives the kids “something to think about”!    They spend nearly every afternoon “doing our story” i.e. acting out what they have been learning about.     Below are some pictures of an afternoon the three older kids spent in the woods behind our house, pretending to be the Yankees fighting the Confederates at the Battle for Little Round Top.

Nathan, shouting “FIX BAYONETS!” (I’m sure the neighbors are wondering WHAT in the WORLD is going on at our house! haha!)

Civil War Field Trip #1

3/30/2012- Greensboro Historical Museum

We’ve spent three weeks studying the Civil War so I took the kids to see the Confederate Arms exhibitat the Greensboro Historical Museum.

Nathan- 7yo, Mary-8yo, Savannah-4yo and Lyra-2yo

This was HYSTERICAL! While we were at the museum, the kids saw these telephones- they were all “what’s this, Mom?” and “How do you use it??” I felt so OLD!  This is the type of phone we had when I was a kid!

Confederate Arms Exhibit- Nathan was, of course, enthralled!

Interspersed with the guns, rifles & other weapons was artwork depicting famous battles, some examples of gear soldiers would have carried with them & other related items.

Telegraph Machine- one of the kids favorite exhibits at this museum.

After we left the museum, we headed over to City Center Park and met Kip for lunch.    There are beautiful fountains & sculptures there- it was a really nice afternoon!

This is one BUSY girl!

Mary, on top of one of the sculptures.

Trying to get a picture of Kip with all four kids is not super easy…  Mostly because of the busy one.

Kip & Lyra having a meeting over the grapes.

Savannah in Pink

Savannah Marie

3/21/2012         4 1/2 years old

Oh, I just love this picture!    Savannah in her favorite pink “fancy dress” with an apron on, helping me chop strawberries.  Pure sweetness in one picture.

Lyra is TWO!

My Baby is TWO!!!

Oh, I can hardly believe it, our precious treasure is TWO years old!    We started off our morning with presents!

Lyra’s three presents from Daddy & Mommy were a dollhouse, a table top kitchen and a Baby Be Blessed Doll.

Nathan was just CONVINCED that Lyra had to have “my first crayola”  because “she’ll just love it, Mom, I know she will!”

A rainbow picture from Savannah b/c we were having a rainbow-themed party for her that night.

Mary made Lyra a potholder to go with her new kitchen set.   She wrapped it up herself.

This is the note she wrote on the back- “I love Lyra.  She has brown hair.  I love my baby sister”    How cute is that??

Opening her presents…

I *wish* I had taken better pictures of the table.   We had rainbow ribbon laid out on the table and tied around the candles & vases.   A bunch of brightly colored rainbow flowers.  And, of course, a rainbow cake!

Originally there was going to be 8 layers but the dark green layer broke when it came out of the pan.   It still came out okay though!

Starting with Kip and going to the left around the table:  my sister Sarah, piano teacher Mr. Hicks, cousin Alec, my Mom Joanne, Mary,  Kip’s Dad- Paw Paw, Savannah, Kip’s Step-Mother Carolyn/Mimi,  family friend Ms. Barbara, Nathan & Lyra.

Oh, I *HATE* that Paw Paw blinked- this would have been such a great picture of him with Mary & Savannah!  We also celebrated Paw Paw’s 83rd birthday that night!

And we celebrated my Mom’s 61rst birthday!   My sister, Sarah with our Mom & Mary!

Lyra & cake

Opening presents- lacing beads (animals) from Pap Pap!  (my Dad)

Bristle blocks from Paw Paw & Mimi!

Lyra’s Baby Be Blessed Doll arrived about a week late, despite being ordered back in January. I have to say, although I was pretty irritated by the delay, she was worth the wait!

The patch on the doll’s tummy reads:

“The Lord your God is with you…He will take great delight in you,  He will quiet you with His love,  He will rejoice over you with singing.”  Zephaniah 3:17
