Three Little Jewells

Funny from Savvy

7/17/2011, 9:25pm-   Kip & I are watching our summer series (NYPD Blue) and we hear a great wailing upstairs.   Kip rushes upstairs to discover Savannah slipped off the stool while trying to fix herself a drink of water and has gotten her nightgown all wet.    Oh the horror.   On top of that, she’s sobbing because she left her little pet carrying bag with a stuffed duck in the car.    Really, the suffering.    So, we whisk her downstairs.    Kip got her items out of the car while I settled in a chair with her, quieted her down and took her wet clothes off.   Kip came back in and I asked him to hand me a pair of clean pajamas from the dining room table.   (I was folding laundry in there earlier this afternoon.)  He couldn’t find any and swore there wasn’t any pajamas in there.   So I said “allright, if I get up and find a pair of pajamas, will you give me a $20 bill?”     So I got up and, sure enough, there was her pajamas on the table.    After getting her changed, I told her to go over to Kip and hold her hand out and say “Pony Up!   Slap me a $20!”   She got all confused and said “SLAP ME A PONY!”.   ohmyword, Kip & I fell out laughing, it was so, so funny!

The Three Greatest Words…

The Homeschool Mother’s Journal

The Homeschool Mother's Journal

In my life this week…

I think this has been the busiest summer we’ve had- it seems like something is going on every week!   I am gearing up for a very busy time- I’ve got a Classical Conversations meeting coming up, a birthday party for the girls, a visit with old teaching friends, 5 days of Vacation Bible School, Dad will be here for 3-4 days, our 12th anniversary, Melodi’s birthday dinner, Sarah & Alec’s birthday dinner, our annual neighborhood picnic and we are hosting a going away party for my next door neighbor- we’ll have 22 people for dinner at our house that night.   All in the next 2 1/2 weeks!

In our homeschool this week…

We started our new school year last week.  We will be covering the 1800′s in our History & Literature studies through Tapestry of Grace.   So far we have read about Napolean, Lewis & Clark and William Carey!  The kids are making History Pockets and we’ve visited the High Point Historical Museum.    Our study of butterflies & moths with Nancy Larson Science has been fun- especially since we found the Regal Moth!   The eggs she laid last week have just started hatching so it will be interesting to see the caterpillars, called Hickory Horned Devils, hatch.  The children drew the moth in their Nature Journals and I plan to have them draw the caterpillars several times in their 36 day life cycle.

Places we’re going and people we’re seeing…

I’m looking forward to seeing some old teaching friends next week!

My favorite thing this week was…

Visiting the High Point Historical Museum with the girls while Kip & Nathan were on their Father-Son camping trip.

What’s working/not working for us…

I’m struggling with Right Start Math.   :(    I really believe that this is a better way to teach math but the teacher’s manual is visually overwhelming to me.   I look at it and my eyes just start to instantly glaze over.   I find myself searching & scanning all the small print during the lesson, trying to figure out what to say or do next.   Kip taught the lesson last night because I just couldn’t figure out what I was supposed to do or how.   I’m hoping that this improves the more I use it because I really want it to work for us!

A photo, video, link, or quote to share…

Here’s a video link on the Hickory Horned Devil- these things are huge!  Hickory Horned Devil Video Clip

Notes to Myself- from a Young Mother and Wife to an Older Mother, Mother-in-law and Grandmother

Notes to Myself- from a Young Mother & Wife to an Older Mother, Mother-in-law  and Grandmother

I have thought about compiling a list of notes to myself for years.  I’ve hesitated doing so because I do NOT want to cast a bad light on my own mother.   I don’t know if my own kids or grandkids will someday read this & I do not want to give my Mom a bad name if this is read many years from now.  Truly, the good and bad on the the following list comes from many sources- a few from my own Mom or Mother-in-law but many also come from stories I hear from friends, neighbors, aquaintenances, things I’ve read online, etc.   Hopefully I will add to this over the years.

1. As a MIL, if you do not fully love and accept your child’s spouse, you WILL damage your own relationship with your child and your grandchildren.

It’s impossible…

It’s (almost) impossible to get a good picture of all the kids!  Here they are at our church’s 4th of July picnic.  We are inside because there was a torrential downpour outside!

I think Lyra wanted to get down…

Training

7/2/2011- Blanket training with Lyra.  We are also working on teaching her to sit for church.   She did pretty well for her first time.

Savvy’s Turn

Today (7/2/2011) it was Savvy’s turn to go to work with Daddy again.   As you can see, our Little Miss Green Eyes was thrilled!

Tradition

We have a tradition of celebrating my Grandmother every year on her birthday.  Gramma Mary Caster was such a wonderful lady- I named my Mary after her.   She was born on 7/3/1920 and was the 6th child out of 12 children.   I remember making these peanut butter buck eyes with her when I was a kid so every year we do this on her birthday and we make sure to use her big plastic tupperware bowl.  Savvy is standing on her stool to reach the counter.  I just love using her things in our daily life!

That’s a lot of books!

Our History & Literature read alouds for last school year!  We studied from the fall of Rome, through the Renaissance period, explorers, etc. up to the Revolutionary War.   Wow- what a fun year we had!

Ready for the New Year

School Room Pictures for the 2011-2012 Year

After lots of planning, cleaning, straightening & reorganizing, we’re ready for the new school year!   We school year round, July-June, so that we can enjoy a more relaxed pace.   This year I’ll be trying out a new schedule of (mostly) 4 day weeks, 6 weeks on/1 week off.    Our first day of the new year is Tuesday, July 5th.

FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL PICTURE for the 2011-2012 Year

Mary, 7yo, second grade
Nathan, 6yo, first grade
Savannah, 3yo (almost 4), preschool

Our History and Literature books for the first semester. I still need to order second semester books but at $390 it will have to wait a bit!

The binder has my lessons plans, another copy of our curriculum & quarterly goals, all the map print outs for the entire year, science materials list and my classical music guide. On top of the binder is my (homemade) record book. I don’t do lesson planning in the traditional way- I simply write down what we do each day in a record book.

SCHOOL ROOM PICTURES

Our school room is our bonus room over the garage. It faces North so has a lovely, indirect light all year long. When you walk in to door, this is what you see:

To the left of the door:

Continuing around the room, left to right. The little door is one of our side attics. On it is our perpetual calendar & a map of the United States, since we will be studying US History this year. Then one of my two toddler/baby areas with baskets & shelves of quiet toys to play with.

On top of the toddler/baby toy shelves is one of our globes, the telephone & two baskets. One holds books for Mary & Nathan to use during read aloud time & the other holds the children’s main logic curriculum- Bambino LUK for Savvy and Mini LUK for Mary & Nathan.

Reading area. The loveseat came from…. storage, of course! (As did the secretary & the book holder to the left of it). The small stand has a red bin that holds homeschooling books that I am reading. Then the other stack of books holds most of our non-History read alouds. All of my poetry books, children’s Bibles & devotions, study guides, etc. A timer for Mary & Nathan to read out loud for 15 minutes each evening. The wall shelf holds books that we read aloud on occasion but not daily or weekly. Also reference books such as the Rose Book of Bible Charts and Maps, etc.

The baskets on the floor in front of the secretary hold all of Savannah’s preschool books and some baby toys for Lyra to play with during our read aloud times in the afternoons & evenings.

Small piece of artwork on display- it’s on the cedar chest that we use as a window seat.

These bookshelves hold most of our Geography, Bible, History, Literature & Science selections. Past that is a smaller shelf with a tv. We originally used it for our Math-U-See lessons but since we have stopped using MUS, we never use the tv. On the shelves below is my second area for toddler/baby play.

White board- for drawing, spelling & vocabulary words, etc.

Our extra large table, I believe it is 8 feet x 4 feet. Now that I’m schooling three kids this year, I really appreciate being able to spread out!

These two baskets hold all of our non-History & Literature curriculum- phonics, math, geography, grammar, spelling, writing, handwriting & science.

Goals to keep us on track:

This rolling bookshelf also came from storage. The top two shelves hold our current or recent History & Literature read alouds. The third shelf holds our Science books and the bottom shelf if for miscellaneous books.

As you move past the big table there is another small attic door. Then our little “fireplace”. Over it is the medicine cabinet made by Uncle Karl & Aunt Harriette’s father. The rug was made by my Aunt Polly or her mother- it is at least 80 years old. My mother’s rocking chair and an antique quilt she gave me.

Then shelves with toys for the two oldest children to play with if they finish early. In the corner is a bean bag & pillows for reading. Savvy’s preschool puzzles are on top as well as a curio display case and the Fisher-Price farm.

Next is my desk. This holds all our files, office materials, my all-in-one printer, our large skeleton, books on homeschooling. The left hand cabinet holds most of our science materials. There are logic games on the middle shelves and on top is the Playmobil Western set, which I will get down in a few weeks when we get a little further into our study of the 1800′s.

Now we are back to the door! I hope you’ve enjoyed the tour of our room. It’s nothing fancy but we really enjoy it.
