October 4-5, 2009 Tweetsie Railroad Again

A Quick Trip

We took the kids to Tweetsie Railroad back in June for Thomas The Train Week.   Because Thomas was there, Tweetsie did not do their normal train schedule with the cowboy and Indian shoot out.    Kip and I decided to take the kids back for a quick one night trip- we went to Tweetsie again, stayed at the same cabin (kids loved sleeping in the loft!) and went to Altapass Orchards the next day.  We bought a bushell of apples for making applesauce & the kids enjoyed some fudge and hot apple cider.

*sigh* It’s impossible to get a picture of all three kids looking at the camera at the same time.

Nathan on the airplane ride- Mary and Savvy in the plane behind him.

Feeding the Llama at the petting zoo.

Feeding the Llama a ice cream cone with animal feed in it.

The baby pig was only 5 weeks old- he was *THE* cutest little thing!

This was the first time the kids rode on a ferris wheel.   Nathan went with Kip first and then Mary took a turn.  Prior to this, Mary had been quite adament that she did NOT want to ride the ferris wheel because it was to high and scary.  Of course, she ended up loving it and wanting to go again.  I thought, well- I haven’t been on one since I was in high school and it used to be my favorite ride- I’ll take her the second time.     NEVER AGAIN.    I’ve become more afraid of heights as I’ve gotten older and the way the chair was rocking- I was so terrified I felt sick.   I was white-knuckling the bar and squeezing my eyes shut.  Mary is sitting next to me, patting my arm and saying  “don’t worry, Mom, you don’t need to be afraid.  I’m right here next to you. “   Pretty sweet stuff.

Good picture of Nathan!

And a good one of Mary!

Here we are on the train, stopped at the fort out in the woods during the shoot out.   Nathan spent the whole time in exactly this position and expression.  His eyes were about as big as dinner plates and he didn’t twitch a muscle.  I think he was a LITTLE NERVOUS.    Mary loved it, Savvy didn’t really understand so she was just watching the show without enough understanding to be nervous.

2009 Beach Pictures, post #2.

On Friday we went to the NC Maritime Museum.   I should preface this by saying that I am NOT into ships, the sea, etc.  It’s not an area of interest for me and in fact, if I’m honest, I’d even say I think it’s a little boring.    However, the museum was SO cool!   We LOVED it!  The exhibits are just gorgeous and there was such a wide variety of exhibits- from how primitive people made boats, life saving techniques, diving (they had a real diving bell and an old fashioned diving suit), a motor repair shop, shell displays, beach trash & recycling, ship models, etc.   Blackbeard the Pirate’s shipwreck was found off the NC shore about 10 years ago so they have a very  nice display with artifacts brought up from the wreck, a model of the ship, etc.   There was a small boat that kids could climb in, a beautiful library.  It was very, very neat.   Across the street, they have a ship building warehouse that you can tour and watch small boats being built.

Learning about pulleys.  The more pulleys you use the easier it is to lift weight.

On Saturday morning it was quite overcast due to the effects of Hurricane Danny.   We headed over to the NC Acquarium at Pine Knoll Shores, which was about 5 minutes from our beach house.    Below, just inside the entrance- gorgeous, isn’t it?

The kids attended several classes while we were there- including a “live dive” class in the shark tank.

A presentation on the otters and watching them being fed.

LOVE this picture- Kip took it.

Learning about horseshoe crabs from one of the museum guides.

Mary asking a question during one of the classes.   They also went to a class on Alligators and Crocodiles.  Nathan got called up to help illustrate how long a crocodile was- of course he was thrilled to get to “help”.

I WISH this picture had come out clearer!   I love the movement of the water & Nathan’s expresssion.

NC Zoo

Thursday, 7/30/2009

At 7:50am I spontaneously decided that a day trip to the NC Zoo was just the thing to do on a hot, humid summer day.  What was I thinking??? We were out the door by 8:45 with all three children dressed and lunches packed.   We had a wonderful day at the zoo.  We got there around 9:20am and left around 2:00- it took 5 hours to see HALF of the zoo and eat lunch.   That place is huge!   Maybe next time we’ll see the North American side of the zoo.

Mary- 5 1/2 years old, Nathan- 4 1/2 years old

Savvy spent the entire carousel ride like this- she was not.quite.sure. about it.

Family Vacation, Day 1: Tweetsie Railroad

June 11, 2009:  Tweetsie Railroad

We’ve been on vacation these past few days!   We left at 7:00am on Thursday morning (6/11/09) and headed to Tweetsie Railroad.

I admit, I was initially a little disappointed to be going during the week that Thomas the Train was going to be there.  Thomas weeks are known to be very, very crowded.   You can only ride the train one time and there are heavy crowds and long lines at all the rides.   However, these were the only days that we could go unless we waited until mid-July which would have been miserably hot.   So, we decided to go ahead and go during Thomas week.   BUT- we got lucky!   The forecast was calling for rain most of Thursday with heavy afternoon thunderstorms.     It was overcast all morning and then there was a torrential downpour around lunch time.  We got to a covered picnic area and ate our lunch and watched a magic show while we waited out the rain storms.   After that, the rest of the day was sunny.   I think because of the forecast and the rain, many people stayed away.   The park wasn’t even half full!  We walked on every ride, rode whatever the kids wanted to ride with almost no lines,  very light crowds, and even got to ride Thomas the Train twice.    It was a great day!

They had these horses all over the park- Mary was so thrilled!

Thomas the Train

Nathan loved this teepee!

Mary in the stagecoach.

Kip with Mary and Nathan.  I had Savannah with me.

Savvy, with me.

I wish this picture had come out more clearly- I love Mary’s expression.

I waited with Savvy while Kip had the big kids on the rides.

They had a petting zoo there- here the  kids are feeding the rabbits.  There were also deer, donkeys, sheep, etc.   Nathan is not to sure about the rabbit eating out of his hand.

I wasn’t kidding when I said it was a torrential downpour.  It was REALLY raining!

Savvy has inherited her Daddy’s hair.   Just like Kip’s, whenever it rains or is very humid, her hair curls up into ringlets.

While we were still waiting out the rain, we watched a magic show.  Mary got chosen to go up on stage and she had SO much fun!   The magician told her she was stealing the show!

Mary’s favorite ride was the carousel- she rode it 5 times!

I thought this ride would be to scary for Mary and Nathan.  It makes me sick- I can’t even ride it.  But no, not those two- they loved it.

Mary won a prize at the ball toss!   She chose the blue puppy she is holding.

Savvy, napping in the stroller that afternoon.

We got to ride the train twice- about half way through they stop for a Cowboy and Indian show….

Nathan was enthralled…

Savvy- where’s your nose??

I love this picture!

Mary had spent quite a bit of time on Wednesday drawing a special picture for Thomas the Train.    The conductor got down to take the drawing on behalf of Thomas- it was so nice of him.

A FUNNY FROM NATHAN: As we were leaving Tweetsie, Nathan turned around in his carseat and looked back at Thomas, over his shoulder.  He shook his head and said, very forlornly, “Oh Thomas, I don’t know when I’ll ever see you again!”

JUST SO YOU KNOW- nobody’s tired!

Savvy’s clothes were soaked from the rain but the suitcase was buried in the back.   So we stripped her down and covered her with her blankets.  I think she was asleep before we got out of the parking lot.

Family Vacation, Days 2 and 3

June 12-13, 2009:  Bear Den Campground, NC Mineral Museum, NC Mining Museum, Linville Caverns

After we left Tweetsie on Thursday evening, we headed to BEAR DEN CAMPGROUND. We stayed in the Mountain Villa and we were very pleased- it was clean and came fully stocked.  The best part of all was the loft- Mary and Nathan slept up there and loved it.

In the evenings, after the kids were supposed to be in bed, this is what we saw… little feet hanging over the loft railing.

This was really a great campground.   There was a swingset across from our cabin and in addition to that there were three other playgrounds.   A big building with three pool tables and an air hockey table.  Canoing, swimming, fishing, paddle boats, golf carts for daily rentals and best of all…. at one end of the lake they had put in a sandy beach!   We headed down there Friday morning for the kids to swim and dig in the sand.    In the picture below, on the far right side of the lake you can see the canoe and paddle boat.   The lake was divided into three areas- a shallow end off the sandy beach for little kids, a deeper middle area with a dock for big kids/teenagers to dive in and swim and then the biggest area for fishing and canoeing, etc.

A FUNNY FROM NATHAN:   We bought Nathan this cap rifle at Tweetsie.  (We haven’t put caps in it though and he doesn’t know the difference so if you see us, don’t ask him about the caps!)    Back at the cabin, Kip was instructing Nathan about rifles and hunting.  He told Nathan that we don’t hunt for sport- we only shoot what we intend to eat.

So Nathan looks at Kip, very confused, and says “So, Dad, do I shoot the banana???”

Savannah, all ready to go… somewhere??   Nathan’s backpack is almost as big as she is, she’s got Nathan’s hat on her head, a insect net and a firm clutch on Giraffy.

After swimming, lunch and naps on Friday, we decided to go to the NC Mineral and Gem Museum. We were originally intending to go gem mining the next day but we ended up going to Linville Caverns instead.  It was actually a pretty  neat (FREE!) museum.

After the Mineral and Gem Museum, we were taking a different way back to the campground, and came across the NC Mining Museum which was really cool.   Look how big this mine is- you could fit our entire house in the entrance!

Mary and Nathan down in the mine.

This was…concerning…to me.  This is how miners used the bathroom down in the mines.  My word.

In the mine, looking back out.

After we got back to our cabin, we cooked hotdogs and s’mores over the fire and then the kids had popsicles and played on the swingset.

Nathan’s popsicle is long  gone by this time, Mary and Savvy are still working on their popsicles even in the swings.

We got up early on Saturday morning, packed up and left.  We went to Linville Caverns which the kids described as “drippy”.

Outside the caverns…

Ready to go home!

By the time we got home on Saturday, Savannah’s giraffy was in a sad state.  It was filthy.  I snuck it away from her to wash it but she saw me put it in the dryer.   You can see what she thought about that- not pleased.

Field Trip to the Farm

Monday, 5/4/2009-

We visited Homeland Creamery with the local homeschool group. We had a hayride tour of the farm, milked a “cow”, fed a baby calf, admired the chickens and turkeys and learned how cows are milked.  Then the kids all had ice cream that was made at the farm and ran around playing with all the other kids.  A very fun day.

SPRING BREAK~

We took a break this week- what started off as a “mental health” day turned into a 5 day Spring Break.   We didn’t go to Tae Kwon Do or Piano Lessons.   We didn’t do a lick of school.    BUT- what we did do:

Painted pictures

Painted paper to make it beautiful and then turned it into a card for our neighbor’s birthday this weekend (she turned 13!)

Played Chutes and Ladders

Read piles of books- our TOG books on Egypt, Aesop’s Fables, Easter books….

Played outside

Rode bikes

Had friends over to play-  Grace (3 1/2 years old) and Mary in the first picture, Savvy and Grace in the second picture.  No clue how I missed Rachel (17 months old) and Nathan.

Baked cookies

Played with Play-Doh

Watched Anne of Green Gables- the first movie and the sequel- that’s 8 hours total of  Anne!   On Friday night I let Mary stay up late- we put the younger two in bed and then Mary and I curled up together and watched the sequel- she was up until 11:30pm!!! eek It sure was fun though!

Built block towers

Made an Easter Bunny Wreath Craft (here’s the beginning of it- pics of the finished product coming soon!)

Watched birds- A Red Headed woodpecker flew 5 feet in front of my face last week! See picture below.  Very awesome.   We’ve got a pair of hawks nesting in our neighbors yard again this year and we’ve been watching them a lot.   Of course BOB is back (Mary thinks that all Cardinals are the same ONE bird- it’s “BOB” and apparently he follows her around town because she sees him all the time! rolleyes

A FUNNY FROM NATHAN:

Nathan: Ms. Barbara, I’m so sorry you got mad at me yesterday.  Have you asked God to forgive you yet?

Ms. Barbara: Not yet, Nathan, but I’ll get right on it.  rolleyes

Circus

The Greatest Show on Earth…

Because Savannah was so sick we canceled our plans to go to the circus.    I was so disappointed!  Apparently though, Kip and I had a miscommunication because he called me as I was walking back into the house (from taking Savvy to the pediatrician.  Barbara stayed with the big kids)  to say that he had bought the tickets.     Our regular sitter, Ms. Barbara, overheard me saying to Kip “Oh no!  I’ve already emailed M (our other sitter) and canceled!”   Barbara graciously offered to stay with Savvy so that we could still go.    I would normally not have left a sick baby but Barbara has 2 grown daughters of her own plus she taught Kindergarten and First Grade for 26 years (I think) and has taught First Grade for 20ish years.   All that to say, she has plenty of experience.  She has been our regular sitter for 18 months now so I knew Savvy was comfortable with her.

Mary and Nathan, ready to go!

Mary, with the horses.

The acrobatics were truly amazing.  I’ve never seen anything like it.   Really fabulous.

Each child was allowed to pick a souvenir.  Not surprisingly, Nathan chose a sword and Mary chose a Horse.

Beach, Part TWO

Nathan… all sandy-faced after a day at the beach.

Photobucket

Nathan was SCARY in the water. He had no, and I mean NO, fear of the water. He would chase the waves out and continually get knocked down. Either Kip or I had to stay *in* the water the entire time Nathan was at the beach because he would continually get knocked down and caught in the undertow?- several times Kip and I had to grab him because he was being sucked out to sea. That boy loves the water.

I was standing on the boardwalk above when I took this picture- you can tell how close we were to the ocean. It was great.

Beach!

Actually, I wasn’t just taking a break, we went to the beach for a week! I just didn’t want to advertise to the whole wide interweb that our house was going to be empty for 8 days, you know?

Here is a link to the house we stayed at: Give Me A Break

And, on to the good stuff- Pictures!

Savannah- first day at the beach.  Look at those gorgeous little legs!

It’s no exaggeration to say that the kids spent 99% of their time at the beach racing back and forth into the water like this.

Friday we took the kids on a trip to Shackelford Island.  We started by taking a tour boat from Beaufort out to Shackelford Island.   There was a “pirate” on board who taught the kids some about Blackbeard the pirate.  When we got to the island each child received a treasure map and the pirate led them all on a treasure hunt.

Nathan-  “AAARRRGGGHHH!”  Doing his best pirate face while still on the boat.
