Savvy, as usual, has her jewelry on first thing in the morning.  She likes to make these little beds/nests all around the house.

5/27/2010- My beautiful Mary! I just LOVE this girl- she is such a treasure!

Mystery Solved! Why in the world are the sunflower sprouts not doing well? They’re always laying down flat and the other seedlings are doing great… Well- “the boss” aka “ruler of the house” aka “RED Jewell” was CAUGHT today- now we know why the sunflowers aren’t doing so great!

Happy 6th Birthday, Mary!

Here is  a repost of what I wrote on her birthday last year- I will do an

updated post about today’s birthday tonight or tomorrow.

Mary turned 5  years old today!

When I was pregnant with Mary, I prayed diligently to the Lord during those first few months of pregnancy to help me to be content with whatever the sex of our baby was.    I desperately wanted a girl but more than that I wanted to be content with whatever child I was given.   The Lord was gracious with me and blessed me with the desire of my heart- a blue-eyed little girl to name Mary after my grandmother.   What a blessing it is to be her mother.

She brings me great joy and is the delight of my days.

Mary is named after my Gramma- Mary Elizabeth Caster Fairchild.     Gramma Mary was loved by all who knew her.   She was a devout, Godly woman who loved the Lord.   Gramma had that wicked Caster humor.   Her blue eyes twinkled.   She loved to read, as all Casters do.  Gramma was quite the tease.   She loved the outdoors, especially birds.   Gramma had firm convictions based on biblical principles but never pushed her ideas on others unless asked.   Gramma would smile and nod whenever someone tried to push her into doing something but then would quietly go on and do what she wanted without every making an argument or causing a fuss.  (something I could learn from!)

Gramma Mary was named after her Grandmother,  Mary Rowe Bargy.  Great Great Gramma Bargy is our grandmother who is famous for eyeing down the panther in the big woods.   She was fearless.  She was known to be wise with her money.   She was tall and strong with piercing eyes.    We have many family stories about her that we tell often when our family is together.   She was born in 1850 so Mary’s name goes back over 150 years in our family.   My one  picture of her is one of my most treasured possessions and someday it will be Mary’s.

I hope that as Mary grows into a young lady she will possess the best character traits of both Marys.   May she be a true and devout follower of Jesus.   I pray that she is fearless in her convictions but still kind and humble with a teachable spirit.   I hope that she is wise with the blessings the Lord bestows upon her.    It is my dearest wish that she always remembers who she is and where she comes from.    That she knows who her people are and tells their stories faithfully.  Let her be a great tease and teller of stories as all Casters are but still possess the “meek and quiet spirit” of a truely Godly woman.

Mary, August 2008

How in the world did she grow up so fast?  Surely it was just yesterday that we brought her home from the hospital…   She’s not “little” anymore- she’s officially a “kid”.   I can hardly believe it.

There is so much deliciousness in this picture.  The little cheeks, the sweety pacifier, the gorgeous leg chublets…

Important Things to Know About Mary at 5 Years Old…

Mary loves cooking.  She is a champion pie-baker and cookie-maker.

She loves her “chores”- setting the table, feeding the pets, making her bed.

She loves her stuffed animals- particularly the small “beanie baby” type animals.

Mary has big beautiful blue eyes.  She calls them her “magic eyes”.

She has a good sense of humor.  She loves telling knock-knock jokes.

Her favorite thing to drink is water.  She doesn’t like milk and will usually choose water over any other beverage.  She likes her water to be “fresh” which means with ice.

She enjoys her school work.  She is on day 124 of Kindergerten.  She is learning to read, working on math, history, science, handwriting and bible.

She loves, loves, loves drawing.

She really likes spending time with  her grandparents.

Mary is a people person- she has never met a stranger and everyone loves her.

Mary is taking Tae Kwon Do lessons twice a week.  Her instructor says that she is a “natural”.

She loves to ride her bike.

Her favorite thing to do when we go for a walk is to visit the neighbors.  She will say to me “So, Mama.  Who are we going to visit today?”

Mary loves her siblings.   She does not like to be apart from Nathan and loves to take care of Savannah.

She loves to spend time with her Daddy.

Mary is quite small for her age- in the 10%.

Mary loves to do puzzles and play games.   She can complete 40 piece puzzles independently but needs a little help on 70 piece puzzles.

Mary enjoys playing with “play sets”  a lot.    Such as a farm and it’s animals, doll house, the Indian set, etc.   Those are probably her favorite type of toys to play with.

She loves to be pushed HIGH on the swing.   She will go as high as you can push her or as high as the swing can go and love every second of it.

She is SUCH a little “Caster”.  Caster’s are Gramma Mary’s side of the family.    Casters have blue eyes.   We are great story-tellers, we are charming and good with our money.   Casters are joke-tellers and have a bit of the drama gene.   Mary is the epitome of a Caster and that brings me great joy.

Mary’s favorite color is red.

2009 Beach Vacation, post #1

This was our third time going to Emerald Isle for an end-of-the-summer beach vacation.  We’ve gone in 2006, 2008 & 2009.   We love how quiet the beaches are and the relaxed atmosphere.   As usual, we had a wonderful time and wished we could have stayed just a few more days.  I’ve got to many pictures to post all at once, so I’ll be splitting them up in several posts.    Here’s round 1.

At the icecream store…  We love this little store- it’s  a combination ice cream/candy/gift store and it’s always fun to stop in for some icecream and then putter around  a bit.

Cape Lookout Lighthouse     Here is a good link with more info & pictures about the lighthouse.

This was one of the things Kip has been wanting to do for the last two trips now but we just hadn’t found the time to go yet.   We made it a priority this time and I am so glad we did- it turned out to be one of our favorite things we did while at Emerald Isle.

On the ocean side of the island, heading up toward the point, hunting for shells.

We took the first ferry at 8:15am over to the island that the lighthouse is on because we heard that there was good shelling on the ocean side of the island.   We were the first people out on the beach and had it to ourselves for probably 45 minutes  while the other tourists were still looking at the lighthouse & visitors center.   The island is uninhabitated by anyone other than the lighthouse keeper and wild ponies that are descendants of  Spanish shipwrecks in the 1700′s.       The shore was littered with shells, as you can see from below, and we had our pick.  It was SO FUN!

Hunting for good shells.

My BIG find!   This was even bigger than the samples that were displayed in the visitor’s center- the rangers were impressed with my find and I was SO thrilled- I never find anything good.   Kip has a better eye for spotting things than I do so it’s rare for me to ever find something on my own- he always sees it first.

Savvy was WORN OUT when we got back to the visitor’s center.  She walked for a good hour and a half, all the way across the island and then way up the beach and walking in sand is tiring.    After we took the ferry back to our car, she was asleep before we got out of the parking lot.

“Our” beach house- we’ve stayed here for three years.

The view from our porch.   This was the effects of Hurricane Danny rolling in.

We spent a lot of evenings down on the beach at sunset.  Kids loved it.

Savannah was NOT.TO.SURE about the ocean.   Her cautious nature kept her from enjoying the water much at all unless she was safely holding onto Daddy.

Mary was proud of her piece of shell she found- it must have been a big one when it was whole.

Nathan is apparently educating Mary about some topic he thinks is important.

Savannah’s Birthday Party

Savannah turned TWO on August 13, 2009!

In our house we do Birthdays a little bit like Christmas morning.   The night before their birthday, after the kids are in bed, we set our their presents and cards.   When they wake up in the morning and come downstairs- it’s like a mini Christmas morning.  Here is what Savvy saw when she came downstairs on her birthday.    Her “BIG” present was a table tent that we had made.  It has panels that go all the way around the table.   Several of the panels have windows to look through.  It can adjust to fit any sized table  by just tying the strings tighter or looser.    ALL the kids have loved this!

More pictures of the table tent.

There are two more panels on the other side.

Savvy’s other presents-  A Pack of Balls-

This Quack & Flap Duck that she loves!

And three books.  “Flotsam” is a gorgeous picture book.

Enjoying the table tent!

For her birthday cake I tried to copy Eric Carle’s “The Very Hungry Caterpillar”.

We had a little party for Savvy that night for whatever family lives in town.

Of course Paw Paw and Mimi came.   Kip’s cousin Amy, her huband Mike and their two girls- Jewell and Jenna.  Our regular sitter, Ms. Barbara and her husband, Tom, came too.  We had a cookout- hamburgers and hotdogs, macaroni salad, baked beans and chips.  Later on we all went out the campfire and made s’mores.   Mimi had never had a s’more before!   Super fun.

That’s little Jenna sitting next to Nathan.

Savvy opening her gifts.  That’s Jewell with Savvy, Nathan & Mary.   Paw Paw and Mimi gave Savvy a WHOLE BUNCH of sand & water toys and a board book about the beach since we are going to the beach soon.   She loved this present!

Ms. Barbara and Tom very generously gave Savvy a $30 gift card to Stride Rite for some new fall shoes!   Also this little stuffed kitty that came in it’s own “pocketbook” (Savvy loves pocketbooks!) and some knee protectors.

Although I don’t have pictures, my family came on Sunday.  We were celebrating Aunt Sarah, Alec, Uncle Mikey and Savvy’s birthday all at once!   MeMa and Papa James gave Savvy a set of magnetic paper dolls and a soft stuffed Elephant that has joined Savvy’s “entourage” that she carries to bed every night.  Aunt Sarah and Alec gave Savvy a new hat (!!) and some board books, including another copy of Savvy’s favorite book “Good Night Gorilla”.  Now she can have a copy in her crib and downstairs.  We had another fun day visiting with family!

Happy Birthday, Savannah!

Savannah is TWO!

This picture was taken 12/2/08 and is one of my favorite pictures of her from the last year.  It was during her first haircut.   I love the serious, solemn gaze she is giving the hairdresser.  I love how you can see how soft and round and pink her little cheeks are.  It’s just *SO* Savannah and I love it.

Things to Know About Savannah at Two:

You are the “pet” of the family- your brother and sister adore you almost as much as Mommy & Daddy.   In addition to “Savvy” and “Puddin” we also call you “precious”, “tiny & sweet”, “itty bitty”.

Savannah’s favorite food is… FOOD.    You like to eat- anything at any time.  We have not found even one thing that you would not eat.   Some of your favorites are grapes, any meat, Stuffed Peppers, Pasta with Red Sauce, Cream of Wheat, Applesauce, Peaches.  Your favorite drink is water.  You love water and will choose it over milk or juice.

You are very particular.   You like things “just so”.  Everything has it’s proper place or function and you get upset when things aren’t in their proper place or used correctly.

You like Books, Balls & Bikes!

Your favorite lovey remains “giraffy”.   Giraffy is getting pretty worn, thin & scruffy.   Your Daddy says you have “loved it to a frazzle”.

You love to strip your diaper off and streak around the house naked, screeching and laughing all the way.

You have inherited Pap Pap’s “bossy finger”, which Daddy & I  think is hilarious.  You point that finger very imperiously whenever you want something.

Like your big sister, you LOVE to draw and color.

You like to play with the doll house and the kitchen set.

Your blond hair curls up at the ends and when it is humid, it curls up all over.    Dad and I often call you “blondilocks”.

“BLONDILOCKS”

Your favorite book is “Good Night Gorilla” by Peggy Rathmann.   We now have two copies of it- one for your crib and one to keep downstairs.   You call it the “UH-OH Book”.

You have the most glorious little pout that we’ve ever seen.    When you don’t get your way, you will say “HUMPH!” and either cross your arms in front of you or slump your shoulders while hanging your arms down at your side.   It is naughty but CUTE.

THE POUT

Speaking of naughty,  you are always doing “little naughty things”, which the whole family delights in.  :)    One of your favorite little naughty things is stealing cheetohs out of the cabinet.  We have many pictures of you from the last year caught deep in a bag of cheetohs with an orange ring around your face and on your fingers.

You were a VERY late walker!  You did not walk until you were 21 months old!   Daddy and I were very concerned.   Your speech is a little delayed as well but you are quickly catching up.    At your recent evaluation, you scored in the 34% for Receptive Language and 19% for Expressive Language.     You are making a lot of progress though so we have decided to take a 3 month break from speech therapy and then reevaluate you to check your progress.   You currently have around 80 words and three phrases: “My Daddy”,  “Raf Please” (Giraffy) and “Cupcake Shirt”  (your favorite pink shirt with cupcakes on it).

You can identify 18 body parts including: head, hair, ears, eyes, nose, teeth, tongue, cheek, tummy, arm, elbow, armpit, biscuits (your bottom), fingers, hands, legs, knees and toes.

You weigh 24.5 lbs and are 32″ tall.  This puts you in the 20% for weight, which is a BIG improvement over the 5% at your last appointment!   We are very pleased.     Your height is in the 8%, so clearly you are taking after Mommy and not Daddy in the height area.

Heirlooms: Hand Mirror

A beautiful hand mirror

When I was a little girl, I remember that Gramma Mary always had this mirror, along with the matching brush and comb, sitting on her dresser.     We were cleaning out her apartment after she passed away and I found the mirror in her top dresser drawer.  No sign of the brush and comb.   They are gone now, somehow lost over the years, which is a tragedy to me.

If you look closely, you can see what appears to be a “D” engraved on the back of the mirror.   Gramma’s name was “Mary” so clearly the “D” doesn’t refer to her.   Looking back in the family records, I can only find one possibility.   Grampa Sam’s Grandmother’s name was “Harriette Phidelia Lucina Haskell Orvis”-  what a name!   I think I have heard that she went by the “Delia” so my best guess is that this set once belonged to her.

Delia was born in 1851 and died September 24, 1923.   She married James Calvin Orvis (5/12/1842-8/29/1920) on September 21, 1869.    She was 18 years old when they married, he was 27 years old.   He must have fought in the Civil War, although we have no family stories of it as we do for Henry Fairchild.

I wonder, maybe this mirror, comb and brush set was a wedding gift?  Or maybe an anniversary present?  They were married 50 years when Grampa Orvis passed away.

I’m not sure why the published post is cutting off the right side of the above two pictures as they are showing up correctly in the preview…

Family Vacation, Days 2 and 3

June 12-13, 2009:  Bear Den Campground, NC Mineral Museum, NC Mining Museum, Linville Caverns

After we left Tweetsie on Thursday evening, we headed to BEAR DEN CAMPGROUND. We stayed in the Mountain Villa and we were very pleased- it was clean and came fully stocked.  The best part of all was the loft- Mary and Nathan slept up there and loved it.

In the evenings, after the kids were supposed to be in bed, this is what we saw… little feet hanging over the loft railing.

This was really a great campground.   There was a swingset across from our cabin and in addition to that there were three other playgrounds.   A big building with three pool tables and an air hockey table.  Canoing, swimming, fishing, paddle boats, golf carts for daily rentals and best of all…. at one end of the lake they had put in a sandy beach!   We headed down there Friday morning for the kids to swim and dig in the sand.    In the picture below, on the far right side of the lake you can see the canoe and paddle boat.   The lake was divided into three areas- a shallow end off the sandy beach for little kids, a deeper middle area with a dock for big kids/teenagers to dive in and swim and then the biggest area for fishing and canoeing, etc.

A FUNNY FROM NATHAN:   We bought Nathan this cap rifle at Tweetsie.  (We haven’t put caps in it though and he doesn’t know the difference so if you see us, don’t ask him about the caps!)    Back at the cabin, Kip was instructing Nathan about rifles and hunting.  He told Nathan that we don’t hunt for sport- we only shoot what we intend to eat.

So Nathan looks at Kip, very confused, and says “So, Dad, do I shoot the banana???”

Savannah, all ready to go… somewhere??   Nathan’s backpack is almost as big as she is, she’s got Nathan’s hat on her head, a insect net and a firm clutch on Giraffy.

After swimming, lunch and naps on Friday, we decided to go to the NC Mineral and Gem Museum. We were originally intending to go gem mining the next day but we ended up going to Linville Caverns instead.  It was actually a pretty  neat (FREE!) museum.

After the Mineral and Gem Museum, we were taking a different way back to the campground, and came across the NC Mining Museum which was really cool.   Look how big this mine is- you could fit our entire house in the entrance!

Mary and Nathan down in the mine.

This was…concerning…to me.  This is how miners used the bathroom down in the mines.  My word.

In the mine, looking back out.

After we got back to our cabin, we cooked hotdogs and s’mores over the fire and then the kids had popsicles and played on the swingset.

Nathan’s popsicle is long  gone by this time, Mary and Savvy are still working on their popsicles even in the swings.

We got up early on Saturday morning, packed up and left.  We went to Linville Caverns which the kids described as “drippy”.

Outside the caverns…

Ready to go home!

By the time we got home on Saturday, Savannah’s giraffy was in a sad state.  It was filthy.  I snuck it away from her to wash it but she saw me put it in the dryer.   You can see what she thought about that- not pleased.

Cutting Garden

My Birthday/Mother’s Day Present

from Kip was this “cutting garden”. Probably one of the best presents he’s ever given me!   A “cutting garden” is a garden of plants, usually flowers, that are used for cutting and putting in vases and such.   We had a cutting garden at our old house and I’ve really missed always having fresh flowers in the house.

One problem at this house is that it has so many large trees (which we love!) but that also = lots and lots of shade.  There are very few spots that get enough sun for any type of garden.   This corner of the backyard does get enough sun and was currently being unused.

BEFORE

THE NEW GARDEN!!!

Kip planted lots of my favorite flowers- Dahlias, Gerber Daisies, Zinnias, Geraniums, Chrysanthemums.    Do you see the plain patch of dirt in the back?    That is lots and lots of Zinnias planted by seed.   Also planted by seed- tons of Wildflowers all throughout the garden!   I can’t wait to see this in bloom around July or so!   We have Trailing Vinca growing in the natural area of our frontyard and Rosebushes growing in the side yard- between the cutting flowers, the roses and the vinca, I’m anticipating some beautiful flower arrangements!

Here are some close ups of some of the flowers in the picture above.    Aren’t these gorgeous?

Standing at the corner of the cutting garden, looking into the backyard.  You can see how shaded the backyard is and how little sun it gets.  I love it in the summer- it’s wonderful to be able to send the children out to play and not worry about sunscreen but it does make it hard to grow any flowers back there.
