In my life this week…

-Broken laptop.  Lyra pulled my MacBook Pro off the end table & cracked the power board.   We found someplace to repair it, for which I was so thankful!

-Lyra is busy- that’s an understatement if there ever was one.   If she’s awake, she’s moving.   Climbing, speed crawling, screeching if she’s left behind, pulling, grabbing.    She’s still crawling 90% of the time but she hasn’t let it slow her down.    She’s faster than greased lightning.    We try to get the majority of our schooling done during her morning nap because she is into everything when she’s awake.

-My Dad will be here for a visit this week-looking forward to seeing him again!

-Mary & Savannah have taken to sleeping together on the bottom bunk- the curl up together like puppies, it is the cutest thing!

In our homeschool this week…

We’re starting Week Six- James Madison and the War of 1812.   We’re planning to go to the Greensboro Historical Museum and see the exhibit on Dolley Madison, who was from Greensboro.     We need to play a little catch up on our Math.   I’ve set out some new things for the week- For Mary & Nathan,  Hot Dots Money Cards and the Money Bags Game
for some extra Math fun.   Qwirkle for Logic.  I put some books away, set out some new ones, cleaned & straightened, etc.      For Savannah, I set out Inchimals
and the Lauri 1-20 Puzzle along with THIS NUMBER PUZZLE from Melissa and Doug.     Oh, I set out the Shapes Wrap Ups for her too.

Places we’re going and people we’re seeing…

As I mentioned above, my Dad will be here for one night.   Also we’re going with two other families to the Greensboro Historical Museum.

Things I’m working on…

I STILL need to make that blackberry pie that I mentioned last time!  ha!    Savannah’s 4th birthday is this Saturday so I’ve got her birthday dinner to prepare as well as her pink, princess castle cake.

I’m reading…

To Learn With Love: A Companion for Suzuki Parents

Still reading this book!

I’m cooking…

Monday- Pizza

Tuesday- Stuffed Peppers

Wednesday- Stuffed Shells with breadsticks

Thursday- Wrap Sandwiches

Friday- Scalloped Potatoes & Ham

I’m grateful for…

Oh, I am so thankful to have my macbook back!   When I originally took it to the Mac Store the “genius” told me it was likely a cracked logic board and the price would be around $1,000 to repair- to much money to spend on a 5 year old laptop.  Kip & I were facing spending $1,800 to replace the laptop.  Luckily we took it to Mac Solutions in Greensboro & were able to have it repaired for $235.   And it wasn’t the logic board at all!

The Homeschool Mother's Journal

In my life this week…

Such a busy week!   On Monday I had dinner with an old teaching friend, on Tuesday evening I took Mary to Tae Kwon Do, on Wednesday evening I had a meeting about a new Classical Conversations Co-Op I’ll be joining and on Thursday the children had their first lesson with their new piano teacher and I had dinner for 25 people  here at our house!   Our neighbor, who has been a wonderfully supportive of our homeschooling, is moving to Philadelphia so we invited everyone on our street plus a few others from the neighborhood for a pot luck cookout.  For sure, by Friday I was wiped out.   Mixed in all this is caring for our home, meals, laundry, a very busy 15 month old baby and schooling the older three children.    There were several days I hardly sat down and we didn’t make it to the pool all week.   I don’t think next week will be any less busy but hopefully after this coming week things will calm down.

In our homeschool this week…

We are starting up week 4 of our school year and we are fully immersed in the 1800′s.   We’ve added Evan-Moor’s History Pockets: Moving Westward.   It is for grades 4-6, so a little bit above Mary & Nathan’s 2nd and 1rst grade levels.   With guidance they can do most of the activities & I read the information to them out loud.   We’ve also added in Tapestry’s mapwork- so far they’ve labeled a world map with continents and oceans and they’ve started their year long cumulative map project of the United States.   History is taking a LOT more time this year but we are also having a LOT of fun!

Places we’re going and people we’re seeing…

My Dad is coming for a visit this week so I think we will take one day and go to the Natural Science Center- we’ll try to do the zoo & Science area and  maybe go out to lunch.   The children have Vacation Bible School every night this week as well.  We are really looking forward to our 3 1/2 days with my Dad- the children love having him here & I especially love having him here during the school week because he always helps with the children’s school work.   An extra pair of hands is SO helpful!

Things I’m working on…

On my list this week is a blackberry pie, a coconut cream pie for Kip and a lemon pie for Dad.   The book I’m reading (see below).    In the link at the bottom of the page, the blog author talks about intentionally trying to incorporate five things into their week- baking, painting with watercolors, modeling, drawing & crafting.  I really love this idea and am trying to incorporate these more often into our days.

I’m reading…

To Learn With Love: A Companion for Suzuki Parents

Mary & Nathan have recently started Suzuki piano lessons.   They’ve been taking lessons for several years but their first two teachers went back to teaching in the public school system.   The teacher they’ve had for the last year six months decided to take the summer off so she could work at some summer camps & do some traveling.  I really did not want to take that much time off so thought it would be a good time to try out a new teacher.    Their new teacher is a very nice elderly gentleman.  He has been teaching piano for 40ish years and has been teaching the Suzuki method for the last 26 years.  Plus, he is *significantly* cheaper than the rate we were paying before.   At our last lesson he brought me the above book to read so I’m working my way through it & enjoying it!

I’m cooking…

Saturday- Herb Crusted Porkchops, green beans, salad & left over baked beans from the cookout we had on Thursday.

Sunday- Breakfast for dinner

Monday- Chicken & Zucchini Stir Fry

Tuesday- Hot dogs & Hamburgers cooked out on the fire pit with chips, fruit, etc.

Wednesday- Chicken & Sausage Baked Ziti

Thursday- not sure yet!

Friday- pizza

I’m grateful for…

The first entirely free weekend we’ve had in months!  No where to go, no company here, Kip isn’t working, no big projects taking up our time- it’s been lovely!   We had a glorious day today.   Kip helped me catch up on math with Mary & Nathan.   For our nature studies we are using One Small Square: Backyard.  They roped out a square yard in a wooded corner of our property.   After observing for a while with Kip they made some sketches for their nature journals.   Later, Kip gave the children another drawing lesson and they all worked on water color painting on our back deck.

An inspirational post- I loved the photos of the crafting area she made and was inspired by her thoughts on incorporating baking, crafting, water color painting, modeling and drawing into her week.            SMALL THINGS

In my life this week…

I think this has been the busiest summer we’ve had- it seems like something is going on every week!   I am gearing up for a very busy time- I’ve got a Classical Conversations meeting coming up, a birthday party for the girls, a visit with old teaching friends, 5 days of Vacation Bible School, Dad will be here for 3-4 days, our 12th anniversary, Melodi’s birthday dinner, Sarah & Alec’s birthday dinner, our annual neighborhood picnic and we are hosting a going away party for my next door neighbor- we’ll have 22 people for dinner at our house that night.   All in the next 2 1/2 weeks!

In our homeschool this week…

We started our new school year last week.  We will be covering the 1800′s in our History & Literature studies through Tapestry of Grace.   So far we have read about Napolean, Lewis & Clark and William Carey!  The kids are making History Pockets and we’ve visited the High Point Historical Museum.    Our study of butterflies & moths with Nancy Larson Science has been fun- especially since we found the Regal Moth!   The eggs she laid last week have just started hatching so it will be interesting to see the caterpillars, called Hickory Horned Devils, hatch.  The children drew the moth in their Nature Journals and I plan to have them draw the caterpillars several times in their 36 day life cycle.

Places we’re going and people we’re seeing…

I’m looking forward to seeing some old teaching friends next week!

My favorite thing this week was…

Visiting the High Point Historical Museum with the girls while Kip & Nathan were on their Father-Son camping trip.

What’s working/not working for us…

I’m struggling with Right Start Math.   :(    I really believe that this is a better way to teach math but the teacher’s manual is visually overwhelming to me.   I look at it and my eyes just start to instantly glaze over.   I find myself searching & scanning all the small print during the lesson, trying to figure out what to say or do next.   Kip taught the lesson last night because I just couldn’t figure out what I was supposed to do or how.   I’m hoping that this improves the more I use it because I really want it to work for us!

In my life this week…

It’s been a busy week.   On Monday I helped the children have their first ever lemonade stand.  On Tuesday we met with the Moms & Kids from church for lunch & playing in the sprinkler fun.    Wednesday, Thursday & Friday were spent playing catch up- getting the house in order and doing a lot of cooking.  I made a Ham dinner on Wednesday and then later in the week I put 7 meals in the freezer as well as two strawberry cakes.   I’ve made macaroni salad to take to my Mom’s and a meal for a mother of a new baby.  Speaking of, my friend had her 5th baby boy on Friday night.   We kept two of her boys overnight & my kids loved having them here.

Also, we FINALLY got a piano!!!   Oh, I am so, so thrilled!   I’ll post pictures later this week!

In our homeschool this week…

We are on break this week as I get ready for the start of our new year next week.   The school room is being cleaned out, straightened and freshened up.   I’m putting some things away and setting out others.  Since we’ll be studying the 1800′s this year I am getting out our North America Geopuzzle, our LeapFrog United States Map game, and other fun things.  I’ll post pictures soon.

Places we’re going and people we’re seeing…

We’ll be visiting my Mom’s mountain house for a family day with my sister, Uncle Bob, Alec, Mike, Shira & her parents.   And we’ll be going to our church’s 4th of July picnic.   One day next week I’m planning on taking the kids to Yum Yum’s for icecream to cross another one of our summer fun things off our list.

My favorite thing this week was…

Helping the kids with their lemonade stand!  They were so thrilled!

What’s working/not working for us…

We are having outrageous fun with the Wee Sing America CD.   We are playing it, LOUDLY, every day at lunch.   The kids are learning The Star Spangled Banner, which is a pretty hard song for them to learn.   As part of my ongoing Yankee Indoctrination Program, they are learning Yankee Doodle Dandy.   We are singing a rousing rendition of the Marine Corps Hymn, yelling the ending part where you sing “proud to be a UNITED STATES MARINE” they way we did it in bootcamp.   And we are having much fun with “I’ve Been Workin’ On the Railroad”.

Homeschool questions/thoughts I have…

I’m so excited to begin Year 3 of Tapestry of Grace.  We’ll be studying the 1800′s and there is just so much fun stuff here.   A few fun things I have planned….
- A hike at Pilot Mountain when we study Lewis & Clark.   Kip will be taking the big kids while I stay home with Lyra.  At 25ish lbs. she’s a bit heavy to carry on a 1-3 mile trail.   They’ll be taking little back packs & their nature journals, colored pencils & if money allows I’ll get them each a disposable camera.
-A visit to the NC History Museum in Raleigh and the Guilford County Historical Museum.
-Evan-Moor’s History Pockets should provide some hands on fun.
-We’ll be studying John James Audubon, making bird feeders, observing & drawing birds.
-We hope to visit Cherokee, NC
-Act out the story of the Alamo
-Make beeswax candles & have a pioneer dinner
-Gem mining

In my life this week…

I’ve been horribly sick all week.   I thought for sure I had strep throat & ear infections but, no, the doctor says it is just a virus.   I’ve got a scratchy throat, coughing, severe sinus pressure & fluid in both ears- my ears hurt terribly.

In our homeschool this week…

Almost nothing got done.  :(    I was able to get a full day of school done on Wednesday but that is all I accomplished.   I’ve just been to sick to do much beyond the bare basics.

Places we’re going and people we’re seeing…

I went to the NC Homeschool Convention last week with Regina.   We did not attend the conference with speakers, only the book fair.   I was able to purchase Savannah’s preschool curriculum, which saved me money on shipping.   I visited Tapestry’s booth and looked at their writing program, in preparation for next year.   I also was able to have a good visit with Melanie Young from Raising Real Men.    And…I met Julia from    All in all, a great book fair & I definitely hope to go back next year.

My favorite thing this week was…

I honestly have no idea- it’s not been a great week for me!

What’s working/not working for us…

Me being sick is NOT working for us!  Ha!   It’s so hard when the Mom is sick- the house is an absolute wreck, I haven’t mopped in 5 days & the laundry is washed and folded but nothing is put away.   Meals have been sketchy at best.

Homeschool questions/thoughts I have…

I’m so disappointed to be sick this week because mentally, I’ve got a lot I want to get done school-wise.   We have 12 days of school left to finish out the school year- 8 of which will be class days & 4 for testing.   I wanted to get 1/2 way through my 8 days this week but that clearly didn’t happen.    Oh well, hopefully I’ll feel better next week & we’ll play a little catch-up.
My Mom recently asked me if I have ever or would ever consider putting the children in public school.  No, I really haven’t and am not sure that I would in the future- I just honestly think I can do a better job than the public school system and I KNOW I can do it in less amount of time.   And honestly?  I’ve been surprised at how much I really, really enjoy teaching.   Not that every day is perfect with my endless patience and children who are just thrilled to do their lessons- that’s not the reality but I still love teaching them & spending our days together.   I’m so lucky to get to do this!

In my life this week…

I’m gearing up for the next two weeks.   I’ve already hosted family dinners on Saturday, 4/30 & Sunday, 5/8.     This Saturday will be a busy day of running errands & preparing to go to the beach.   Saturday is also my birthday so we’ll be celebrating it with Kip’s family that evening.   My Dad will arrive on Monday, 5/16 to spend the night & we will probably host a family dinner that evening.   Later on we’ll be heading out to Beaufort/Emerald Isle to see Christopher Columbus’ ships, the NC Acquarium, NC Maritime Museum, etc.   We’ll have about 2 days at home before family arrives from Florida- they’ll be spending several days with us visiting.  Then I’ve got the NCHE convention on Saturday, 5/28 in Winston-Salem.

In our homeschool this week…

We are wrapping up our study of the Revolutionary War.   We’re moving into the Articles of the Confederation & the Constitution.  We are only 2 or 3 weeks away from finishing up Year 2 of Tapestry of Grace!

Places we’re going and people we’re seeing…

Replicas of Christopher Columbus’ ships & Uncle Ron & Aunt Alice will be here soon after!

My favorite thing this week was…

Mary and I have been learning to embroider!   This is a skill a girl of her age would have been learning during Revolutionary times.    I’ve wanted to learn to do this for years so I’ve been thrilled that we’re finally doing it!    My first project that I’d like to work on is embroidering outlines of the children’s handprints.

What’s working/not working for us…

Nancy Larson Science is working wonderfully for us!    Here’s a short review I recently wrote:

We’ve been using Nancy Larson Science for about 5 weeks now with my 1rst grader & Kindergardener. We are so, so pleased with it. I was initially not sure how I would like using a scripted lesson because I am very much someone who likes to tweak, do my own thing, etc. But it turns out that, for a non-science person like myself, the scripting is wonderful. I’m not struggling with how to explain a concept or how to word things. The kits come with everything you need & my kids have REALLY enjoyed the hands-on sets that come with it as well as the picture cards.

Another reason that I chose Nancy Larson Science over the others I was considering (R.E.A.L. Science Odyssey, A Reason for Science, Noeo Science) is because it required far less writing than the others. With two emerging readers & writers, I just felt that we already do so much writing between their handwriting assignment and the writing they do in their phonics, math, grammar, spelling & writing books that I really did not want to add a bunch more writing to their day.

For the first time ever, Science is getting done on a regular basis. The kids are learning & really look forward to our science lessons.

(I started out the year with Apologia but because our main curriculum is literature/reading heavy- Tapestry of Grace- I was just totally overwhelmed with Apologia.)

Homeschool questions/thoughts I have…

I’m thinking a lot about our next school year & what I want to include.  More & more I feel impressed upon that we, as parents, have such a short time to lay a truly solid Biblical foundation for our children.   I read two things recently that have shaken me.  #1- James Dobson quoted some studies that say if a child has not experienced a born again salvation by the time they are 14, they have only a 6% chance of ever being saved in their lifetime.   #2- Someone recently posted a question on a homeschooling message board- “If you used to be a Christian but aren’t now, when/how did that happen?”    Almost universally everyone answered something like this “about the time I was 12/13 I started having questions & no one could answer them (either because the parents didn’t know or they were emotionally unavailable).

With that in mind, I’m feeling driven to place a larger emphasis on Bible teaching this year.  We read the entire Old Testament aloud last year and the entire New Testament this year.   This year I think I’d like to choose a few books of the New Testament- James, maybe?  I haven’t decided which yet- and really focus on reading them aloud & tearing them apart, explaining what is meant, how to apply it in their lives, etc.    At lunch time, once we finish “Step Into the Bible”  and our study of “the Fruits of the Spirit” from Galations 5:22-23, I’d like to go back to “Leading Little Ones To God” which I think does an exceptional job of explaining what we  believe and why to children.    I am also considering shifting the majority of their memory work to Bible Verses or possibly even memorizing one or two long passages.
