Cutting Garden

My Birthday/Mother’s Day Present

from Kip was this “cutting garden”. Probably one of the best presents he’s ever given me!   A “cutting garden” is a garden of plants, usually flowers, that are used for cutting and putting in vases and such.   We had a cutting garden at our old house and I’ve really missed always having fresh flowers in the house.

One problem at this house is that it has so many large trees (which we love!) but that also = lots and lots of shade.  There are very few spots that get enough sun for any type of garden.   This corner of the backyard does get enough sun and was currently being unused.

BEFORE

THE NEW GARDEN!!!

Kip planted lots of my favorite flowers- Dahlias, Gerber Daisies, Zinnias, Geraniums, Chrysanthemums.    Do you see the plain patch of dirt in the back?    That is lots and lots of Zinnias planted by seed.   Also planted by seed- tons of Wildflowers all throughout the garden!   I can’t wait to see this in bloom around July or so!   We have Trailing Vinca growing in the natural area of our frontyard and Rosebushes growing in the side yard- between the cutting flowers, the roses and the vinca, I’m anticipating some beautiful flower arrangements!

Here are some close ups of some of the flowers in the picture above.    Aren’t these gorgeous?

Standing at the corner of the cutting garden, looking into the backyard.  You can see how shaded the backyard is and how little sun it gets.  I love it in the summer- it’s wonderful to be able to send the children out to play and not worry about sunscreen but it does make it hard to grow any flowers back there.

New Art

We have a new piece of art hanging in our kitchen…

Kip has a friend who is an artist.  He does folk/primitive art from a Christian view point.  He and Kip have been doing a Bible study every other week together.  This is the painting he gave Kip to commemorate their finishing the book of John together.

We found the *perfect* spot for it in our kitchen-  I love it!

Christmas

Yeah. You read that right. Christmas. A sure sign that most of you will think I’m crazy. It’s August and I’m already thinking about and planning for Christmas.

I’ve got a folder in my bookmarks specifically for Christmas/Birthday links. Anytime I see anything that might be a good gift for Kip, the kids, me or anyone I know, I bookmark it and put it in this folder. I’ve got a long list already.

In my defense, Toys and Co. has a big sale in October. 20% of everything in the store. Toys and Co. carries a lot of the same things as Magic Cabin, Oompa, etc. that I like. IF I plan ahead, I can save a fair bit of money by shopping at T&C during their big sale. Not only can I buy from a local store which makes returns/exchanges easier, I don’t have to pay shipping and handling, everything is 20% off AND I have a Coupon from the Entertainment book that I’ve been saving all year for this sale. SO- that really means that I need to know what I plan to purchase for the kids Christmas by October which is only two months away. There is MUCH planning involved so that we can get the most bang for our buck.

Mary will definitely be getting a bed and a changing table for her dolls. Maybe this changing table and this doll bed. Not sure yet. Probably this Toy Grocer’s Shop by Erzi as well. I’ve noticed that since we got rid of the JUNK toys and she has FEWER toys, she plays much better with what she does have. So- if she gets the Erzi food, which is so nice, I’m getting rid of most of her plastic food. She may get this Pizza by Melissa and Doug too. She has the M&D birthday cake, similar to the pizza, and she really enjoys it. At least one of these *gorgeous* puzzles by Beleduc at Moosekiss Toys.

The problem with Nathan is that there is so MUCH for boys. You know how when you go into a store there is always 2 or 3 times more clothes for girls than there are for boys? Well, it’s the opposite problem with toys. There are tons of really NICE toys for boys. With girls- if you’re not going to do the whole Barbie/Bratz/Fashion dolls thing or get into all that Princess trash, you’re pretty much left with kitchens and related items and baby doll stuff. Not much else. A lot of the crafty stuff doesn’t start until age 8+.

So- anyhoo- for Nathan. Maybe the PLAN Airport and either the PLAN firestation and police station or the HaPe Fire Station and Police Station. The Haba Pulley/Block and Tackle which we would put on their fort in the backyard. Definitely this FISHING GAME which I know he’d love. He’ll also get a Beleduc Puzzle from Moosekiss like Mary will and SURELY at least something from HERE.  We’ll definitely get him this Space Base to go with the rocket ship that my Mom got him for his birthday last year.  If you’ve got a little boy- that thing is awesome!  The rocket ship and this pirate ship from PLAN toys are the two things that he still plays with the most.

BOTH kids will defintely get PLAN’s Native American Set. We’ll be getting two of these because it’ll be way more fun if they’ve each got their own. For ALL THREE kids, maybe the Cranium Super Fort which I’ve heard rave reviews about.

We STILL have to find stuff for my Dad and Kip’s Dad as we usually do the shopping for them. And also, the same for their birthdays- Nathan’s is just 10 days after Christmas and Mary’s is just 6 weeks after Christmas.

For Savannah- maybe these Haba Wooden Fantasy Blocks or these Haba Fit Together Building Blocks.    Maybe Djeco\’s 14 Animal Cubes? I think this Picnic Basket from Lakeshore Learning is cute.    And honestly?  That’s it.  That’s all I’ve got for Puddy so far so if anyone has any suggestions I’d love to hear them.

Greeting Card System

I’ve been asked about my greeting card system so I thought I would share it with everyone.

Here’s my greeting card system:

First, I signed up for the mailing list at my local Hallmark.  Every year on my birthday, they send me a card for 20% off my entire purchase, to be used one time during my birthday month only.

So, in May, I take my 20% off coupon plus a master list of all birthdays for the entire year and head to Hallmark.  Not only do I buy all birthday cards for family members, I also stock up on a few extra birthday cards as well as sympathy, get well, getting married, bridal shower, new baby, baby shower, congratulations and thank you cards.

Then, when I get home, I take all of the birthday cards I bought and put a sticky note on each one with the name of the person it was bought for.  Those cards are filed in the card folder below, by month.   Then, each month for the entire year, I just pull out that month’s cards and mail them.  So simple.

Next, I take all of the extra sympathy, congratulations, etc. cards and file them in this box according to topic.   In the back of the box I keep a few sets of blank cards, extra envelopes, etc.

We’re having Quite the day here…

We’re having QUITE the day here at the Jewell household…

Mary and Nathan have been into everything.

They started by emptying my cup of ice water all over the leather couch when I had my back turned (for TWO seconds!).  As I was picking up that, they moseyed on into the study and emptied all the spanish moss out of the tree’s pot and spread it out all over the floor.  While I was sweeping that up, the cat threw up TWICE on the kitchen floor.  In the meantime, both babies take off their pajama bottoms and diapers and are running around with bare biscuits.  Finish sweeping, put diapers back on.  Take them upstairs to play with Nathan’s tool bench.  Close all the doors to bathrooms and bedrooms upstairs.  I then made the colossal mistake of running downstairs to get a glass of water.  I hear giggling and screaching- not good.  Run back upstairs.  They have opened the bathroom door and are dumping Nathan’s tools into the toilet and splashing toilet water everywhere.   So, now we have to have a bath.   Bathe both babies, dress them, take them downstairs for lunch.  Mary eats great- Nathan refuses to eat his lunch.  Mary gets a cookie which results in Nathan, head down in his arms on the table sobbing pitifully over a “cooooky”.   Clean everyone up and put them in the living room while I pick up kitchen.  Pants and diapers are dispatched of again! (What’s up with that???)

I don’t know about you guys, but I’m ready for a nap.   Heaven help the child who doesn’t nap for two hours because I need a two hour nap.

Also- we visit the in-laws every Friday night so tonight’s the night.  I wonder if I could get away with staying home and hibernating?

Look What Kip Found!

Look what Kip found!

You *have* to check this out below!

Kip found one for FREE- great working condition, pretty clean and way cooler than the one in the picture below- it’s black and silver. He’s been cleaning it up and putzing around with it out in the garage. We think we know of a certain young man who has a birthday coming up in January… :)

Isn’t it cool???

Shoes…

Can I just say… Mary needed new dress shoes and sneakers and the Great Wild Wildebeest needed new sneakers as well.  My friends, I dropped $140 at Stride Rite today.   That is a crazy amount of money on three tiny pairs of shoes.  Can they not make decent shoes for less than that?  Apparently not.

Intentional Parenting

Intentional Parenting

Check out this website-Intentional Parents

She talks about the three types of parents.
1. Survival Parents- doing whatever they have to do to just get by
2. Default Parents- doing whatever is popular
3. Intentional Parents- doing what is *best* for their child, even if it is difficult or unpopular.

I love the stated goals and methods for the intentional parent.  I’ve quoted them below.

Goal: Preparing my child for life as a productive adult, developing my child’s God-given mind and abilities, protecting my child’s heart

Method: Purposely spending time with the child and building a relationship so he will learn by watching and interacting with me.

Some of the descriptions of the goals and methods used by survival parents and default parents really stung- I know I’ve been guilty of making these mistakes on occasion.   I need to reread this site on occasion to give me that kick-in-the-pants reminder that I seem to need every so often.   Being a SAHM,  I spend all day with my children.  But, I’ve realized that often I am not purposeful in what we are doing.  To often, we’re just hangin’ out together.  Instead, I should be including them in the household chores more, purposefully teaching them how to do things- whether it’s baking cookies or sweeping the floor.  A two year old is perfectly capable of sweeping the floor (not well, mind you, but still, it’s good practice) or helping to empty the dishwasher.   I find too, that I turn around twice and the day is gone and we haven’t accomplished anything meaningful or done anything fun.  Hence, the big schedule you see in my previous post.  Without it, we don’t do nearly enough playdough, coloring, puzzles and walks.

Check out the intentional parenting site, it’s interesting, and  you might glean something useful for yourself- don’t just rely on my paltry summary from above.
