Romans 5:3-4

Two Good Bits That I have Been Marinating On

Romans 5:3-4  we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; and perseverance, character; and character, hope.

I’ve been thinking about this verse lately as it relates to parenting children, especially the difficult ones.    So often I am frustrated by this child’s behavior & attitude when really, I should so grateful!    Grateful that this sin isn’t hidden away where it is difficult to see and thus to root out.   Grateful that we are able to work on these issues together- because this tribulation will result in perseverance & hope for BOTH of us!  Isn’t that a wonderful thing?!?!

Psalm 123:3 Have mercy on us, O Lord, have mercy on us!  for we are exceedingly filled with contempt.

When we discern that other people are not growing spiritually and allow that discernment to turn to criticism, we block our fellowship with God.   God never gives us discernment so that we may criticize, but that we may intercede.  -OC

I have been on the receiving end of such criticism, and oh, how it hurts.  I pray that God will show me how and when to intercede and will not allow a spirit of condemnation, superiority and critical thinking to grow in my heart towards others.

Field Pictures

Back in the Spring we had pictures done by the wonderful Leslie of Leslie Williams Photography.   It was Mary’s 7 year picture, Nathan’s 6 year and Lyra’s 1 year picture.  Savvy was 3 1/2 years old.   There was a snafu with the disc and then various things came up that kept Leslie & I from getting together.   Well, I finally have the pictures that were taken in April and they are wonderful.  Enjoy!

Mary, 7 years old

Nathan, 6 years old

Savannah, 3 1/2 years old

Lyra, 1 year

I had Leslie take a picture of Lyra’s chubs because who doesn’t love chubby baby legs???!?!

Family

We’ve had lots of company lately & several family dinners.   Here are a few random pictures….

5/8/2011-  My brother with Mary, Papa James, Nathan & Alec

5/25/2011- Savannah, Nathan, Uncle Ron, Aunt Alice holding Lyra, Mary.   I just love having our extended family come & visit.  Aunt Alice is my Dad’s first cousin.    My Dad’s father, Samuel, and Alice’s father, Charlie, were brothers.

Company…

4/9/2011

The week of April 5-11, Uncle Bill Fairchild & Aunt Celeste came to visit.   Uncle Bill is my father’s brother (we have lots of Bills in the family so I have to be clear which is which!).  This is the third year they’ve come to visit & we had such a wonderful time.   I hope that when I am in their position as the older generation, I can emulate their interactions with the younger generations.    They are loving & affectionate with the children while still being firm.   They don’t get bent out of shape or hold it against them when there is a discipline issue with a child.    They constantly affirm & encourage us as parents- frequently complimenting us on our parenting.    Their encouragement was so refreshing to us!       When they left, we felt rejuvinated instead of worn out- what a wonderful testimony to their Godly influence on our lives!

An Oldie….

One of my all time favorite pictures from the archives-

Mary & Nathan (3 1/2 and 2 1/2 years old)- 9/29/2007

“Mama, he’s trying to kiss me!”

Oh my, how they have grown!   Mary looks so little, so *young*… I can hardly believe it.   Look at that smile on Nathan & his cute little pug nose.    Don’t they look like they are having a grand time.   4 years later & they still love each other & play together constantly.     I so want & pray & hope that they will maintain a close relationship as they grow into adulthood!

New Years Eve, 2010

My Brother came for a visit on New Years Eve!

I really, really enjoyed having my brother come for a visit- I can’t remember the last time I got to hang out with him without the entire family around.   Not that there’s anything wrong with having everyone around but it’s more difficult to have a nice visit in a large group of people.

Mike, reading stories to the three big kids.  (Roo was in bed already, sound asleep)

Nathan, showing off his battle axe & helmet.   Doesn’t he look FIERCE?!!?!

Christmas Snow

For the first time in 80 years, it snowed on Christmas Day!!!

The next morning (12/26/10)  Kip took the big kids out sledding at our neighbors hill & helped them to build a snowman. I stayed inside with sweet baby Roo, cozy by the fire.

Our back yard.

Snowman building in the front yard.

We were short on the traditional snowman decorating items so we used what we had on hand- olives for the eyes, celery for the nose, cookies for the mouth & buttons.  :-)

Tied Down [with Kids]…

Tied Down

“They tie you down,” a woman said,
Whose cheeks should have been flaming red
With shame to speak of children so.

“When babies come you cannot go
In search of pleasure with your friends,
And all your happy wandering ends.
The things you like you cannot do,
For babies make a slave of you.”

I looked at her and said: “‘Tis true
That children make a slave of you,
And tie you down with many a knot,
But have you never thought to what
It is of happiness and pride
That little babies have you tied?

Do you not miss the greater joys
That come with little girls and boys?
“They tie you down to laughter rare,
To hours of smiles and hours of care,
To nights of watching and to fears;
Sometimes they tie you down to tears
And then repay you with a smile,
And make your trouble all worth while.

They tie you fast to chubby feet,
And cheeks of pink and kisses sweet.
“They fasten you with cords of love
To God divine, who reigns above.
They tie you, whereso’er you roam,
Unto the little place called home;
And over sea or railroad track
They tug at you to bring you back.
The happiest people in the town
Are those the babies have tied down.

“Oh, go your selfish way and free,
But hampered I would rather be,
Yes rather than a kingly crown
I would be, what you term, tied down;
Tied down to dancing eyes and charms,
Held fast by chubby, dimpled arms,
The fettered slave of girl and boy,
And win from them earth’s finest joy.”
