Christmas, 2011

December 24, 2011- CHRISTMAS EVE

Kip was born on Christmas Eve so we have a tradition of spending the evening with his parents.   We have Kip’s birthday dinner & cake, he opens presents and then later, after dinner, we all go in the living room and the kids open their presents from his parents.      This year, for Kip’s birthday, we did SEVEN days of birthday for the week leading up to the 24th.  The kids & wrapped seven presents in brown craft paper and numbered them 1-7.   Then each day he drew a number out of a jar and opened the corresponding gift.   It was very fun!

Two pictures of all four kids- wish they hadn’t come out blurry.

Opening presents from Paw Paw & Mimi.

December 25, 2011- CHRISTMAS DAY

The three big kids waiting on the stairs to be called into the living room.  (Lyra was still sleeping)

The tree & presents…

WOOHOO!

Mary, opening her special gift from Daddy & Mommy.  It was the long-awaited and much-desired American Girl doll, Kaya.

Nathan opening his special gift from Daddy & Mommy- a cowboy set with chaps, poncho, red hankerchief & a set of 12 shot cap pistols.   (Check his birthday post for a picture of the outfit!)

Savannah, opening her “Pop-Arty” beads.   They are beads that you can pop together to make all sorts of jewelry- rings, bracelets, necklaces, etc.

Kip is not thrilled that I am posting this picture but it is the ONLY one we got of Lyra on Christmas Day!   She was so busy running all around that it was impossible to get a good picture of her.   I hate that I missed getting a good one.  :(

Despite sickness (me, Savannah & Lyra) and our cat, Princess, dying on Christmas Day, it was still a really nice Christmas.   We stayed in our pajamas, ate our traditional Holiday French Toast for breakfast, played with toys, took naps… it was lovely.

Gingerbread House

December 16, 2011

We spent the morning making chocolate lollipops!

That evening we decorated our gingerbread house.

It’s a Christmas Miracle-  a picture of all four kids and everyone is looking at the camera!!!  If only Lyra had been smiling….

We all, including the kids, refer to Lyra as “the precious treasure”.   She is such a sweet, squishy, happy little doll!

Random Picture Post

December 12, 2011- writing with quill & ink…  (part of our school work that week)

December 15, 2011- I took the three oldest children to their first theater production!   We went to see “The Best Christmas Pagent Ever”  and then out to lunch.    It was great fun.   We have tickets in February to see “Freedom Train” (about the Underground Railroad) and “Charlotte’s Web” in March.

December 20, 2011- Dentist Appt.  I don’t usually take pictures at dentist appointment but since it was Lyra’s first visit to the dentist, I brought it along.   Mary blinked so her picture didn’t come out very well.   Here is Nathan & Savvy and then Lyra’s first visit.    The dentist tells me that they will all need braces.  haha!

Later that night we joined some friends and drove around looking at Christmas lights and then stopped at Krispy Kreme Doughnuts.   We do this every year but it was extra fun to do it with friends this year!

Christmas Day, 2011

Its Christmas Day and I’m sick.   The two little girls are sick with low grade fevers & nose issues.   And our cat died today.   Seriously.

We still had a great Christmas though- why is it that every year feels like the best Christmas ever?  :)     Be back soon with pictures from the last two weeks.

More Advent-y Goodness

I thought I posted this last week but I just found it in my drafts folder.  I was going to post links to each of the books but decided to just go ahead and post as it- I’m to busy & to tired to do anything extra right now and sorting out my adding links issue just isn’t going to happen today!

One of our favorite Advent resources is “The Advent Book” by Jack and Kathy Stockman.

As you can see, the illustrations are just gorgeous.   Each night we open a different door to reveal the scripture and accompanying illustration behind it.

A good Advent activity book.

One of our favorite Advent read alouds- great story about why we needed Jesus to come from the very beginning and the illustrations are lovely.

We are reading a chapter a night from “The Jesse Tree” and using Ann Voskamp’s free printable ornaments to hang on our Jesse Tree.

Our Three Wise Men start their trek up in the school room and are slowly making their way to the stable.    Right now they are at the top of the stairs.

Another Advent calendar.

If you know me, you know I LOVE Tasha Tudor!   “A Book of Christmas” is a pop up Tudor book and it even has an Advent calendar in the middle!

Christmas Parade

Christmas Parade 2011

I really love small town parades!  Marching bands, classic cars, throwing tons of candy to the kids, the Shriners in the tiny vehicles… I love it all!

Shriners in their little motorcycles and race cars- the kids though these were so cute!

Someone stole Mommy’s chair…

Santa and Jingle

December 1, 2011

The long awaited day has finally arrived- Advent begins & our elf, Jingle comes back!    I’ve already posted about Advent a few times so I’ll not repeat that part again- Jingle came back & brought Dunkin’ Doughnuts for breakfast.

Big kids in their Christmas pj’s- of course, I couldn’t get a picture of Ms. Busy!

Lyra, 20 months & Savvy, 4 years.   I wanted to get these pj’s for Mary but the store was out of them in Mary’s size every time I checked.

That evening we invited our piano teacher, Mr. Hicks, to stay for dinner.   Then we decided to go on a night walk and lo and behold!  We ran into SANTA on a firetruck right here in our neighborhood!     The big kids were just thrilled.  Lyra, not so much. :)

Notice Mary brought her beautiful doll, Annie, that my Mom made her for Christmas a few years ago.

Lyra was not interested in having Santa hold her at all.   She just stared at him from the safety of Daddy’s arms.   Such a fun, fun day!

12 Days of Christmas

Posting this for myself. It came from a message board and I want to be able to pin this into pinterest to do next year.   The message board is a private one so I can’t pin from there.  This is from Alyshia and I’d like to do some variation of this next year!

Night One:

Tonight’s the first night, and this is where it all starts.
Know that each of these gifts comes straight from our hearts.
Now each night going forward, we’ll bring gifts to your door,
The twelve days of Christmas, not one less or one more.

Beware of this warning- your friends will be here,
But you better not look , or we will all disappear.
Then all of your gifts that we’ve carefully planned,
On some other front porch they will surprisingly land.

Now in the song, it’s a partridge and pear
but when I looked, my trees were all bare!
So I ran to the store at a hurried pace.
Pears, the had plenty, but no birds in the place!

GIFT: canned pears

Night Two:

Tonight calls for 2 turtle doves,
but they are extremely hard to find!
So here are turtles and doves -
The chocolate candy kind!

GIFT: uh, turtles…

Night Three:

Hens are chickens
If they are French, or not!
Here is chicken soup
to heat in the pot!

GIFT: ok, some are straight forward…

Night Four:

The calling birds have all flown away.
They’re visiting South to see the view.
Instead of a call, they left these few things,
a package of mini eggs – their gift to you!

GIFT: ok, reeeeally straight forward…

Night Five:

Only 5 golden rings?
How about one more?
of golden doughnuts
I bought from the store!

GIFT: you, got that, right?

Night Six:

Six geese a-laying some eggs quite unique.
I looked at them close and what do you think?
They are made of some chocolate candy!
Here are six for you, isn’t that dandy?

GIFT: kinder eggs

Night Seven:

The seven swans were swimming and having such fun,
that when I called them, they wouldn’t come out, not one!
I called until my face, it turned blue,
So instead made these “swan” eggs for you!

GIFT: I melted white chocolate and put a yellow m&ms in them to look like fried eggs.

Night Eight:

Eight maids were milking
Their beautiful cows
when they suddenly realized,
the milk was all brown!

GIFT: er, chocolate milk….

Night Nine:

Nine ladies dancing was a beautiful sight,
I applauded so loud, it gave them a fright!
They ran away in a hurry, but left behinds these treats!
I hope you enjoy it even though it was underneath their feet.

GIFT: I don’t remember…

Night Ten:

Ten Lords a-leaping.
Who could reach the stars first?
To send back to us
These delicious starburst!

GIFT: uh, starburst…

Night Eleven:

Eleven pipers piping came to my door,
As I jumped up to answer it,
the pan fell to the floor.
I stood among the cookie crumbs
and wondered what to do.
The day was late, the time was short,
I had no gift for you.
I bent and swept the cookies up
into a small dustpan.
A friend like you, I told myself,
would surely understand.

GIFT: cookies wrapped up on a dustpan.

Night Twelve:

Twelve drummers drumming
I think would be too loud!
So I thought about some drumsticks
but ones not for making sound…

GIFT: ice cream drumsticks.

And here’s another one:

This glad Christmas season is so full of fun.

We’re happy to share with your family, then run.

How grateful we are that you’re playing our game.

You’ll now find that Christmas won’t be the same.

The song that we sing twelve days in a row

Won’t get tiresome with treats from friends you know.

But to keep up the mystery and the fun,

You won’t know who we are until we’re all done!

Each night we’ll bring something

Please don’t watch for us coming.

If you catch us too soon,

It will spoil the fun that’s coming!

Tonight calls for a partridge for your pear tree,

But partridges are tough catches, you see.

Now, how about some canned pears, instead of the bird.

They taste very good, or so we have heard.

Tonight we have turtles & doves coming your way.

Eat all the chocolate you may.

Because in your family you have quite a few,

We’ve left on your doorstep more than just two.

Hens are chickens

If they are French or not!

Here is chicken soup

To heat in a pot.

Four calling birds, we can’t pay the fare,

For all we have is a purse full of air.

As Christmas approaches, and calls you must make,

Don’t use these gold coins or the phone you may break.

Only five golden rings?

There really are more

Of gold pineapple rings

I got from the store.

Six geese-a-laying– an interesting sight.

One of them squawked and they all took flight.

What they left in their nest, you’ll just have to look,

But with these you won’t want to cook.

The 7th day of Christmas and we are half way done,

Remember no peeking or you’ll spoil the fun.

On this day of Christmas, how nice it would be,

If seven swans a swimming your family could see.

But no swans could be found for you on this day,                                               So we’re leaving bubble bath help finish your day.

On the eighth day of Christmas, we’re busy as a bee.

Eight maids-a-milking, no where do we see.

“Brown” cows were found in a barn instead,                                               So, here’s some chocolate drink to have before you go to bed.

Nine ladies dancing would be too big a crowd,

Besides their music is way too loud.

We have for you the canes that they used,

Their sizes are so small, aren’t you amused?

Ten lords a leaping would be an awesome gift,

But they got stuck while jumping through a white snowdrift.

While we can’t leave you snow,

this can be saved to use tomorrow!

{Just wait and see…}

Those eleven pipers piping reminds us of our plumber,

To leave him on the doorstep would be a real bummer.

Now make your water piping hot, and fill your cups with care.

We’re giving you some hot chocolate we know you’ll love to share.

We simply can’t believe this game is almost through.

We’ve had a jolly time bringing these gifts to you.

With only one more night, don’t you wish you knew,

Just exactly who we are and why we’re doing this for you?

Christmas Eve has arrived, and on this our last night,

One dozen drummers would be a grand sight.

But the noise of their drums would hurt your head,

So eat all these cookies we bring you instead.

The thing to now remember, if you’ve had lots of fun

When next December rolls around you make the nightly runs.

Make sure you pick your family with tender, loving care

‘Cause its fun to get to spoil them at this special time of year.

And so we wish you a joyous Noel,

We know that you’re hoping our name we will tell.

But our name stays a secret, we just cannot share.

It wouldn’t be right, no it wouldn’t, so there!

Merry Christmas!

Day one:  can of pears                Day eight:  chocolate drink
Day two:  turtle & Dove candies        Day nine:  candy canes

Advent, 2011

Advent starts today for our family and we are SO excited!

Our new Advent wreath for the table…

In January, 2003 I traveled to Rome, Italy with my Mom.  I bought this beautiful Fontanini Nativity Set from a store in St. Peter’s Square on very steep discount because apparently they don’t do to many Nativity sales in January. :D     What an heirloom for our family!  I love that this is made for families to display and for children to play with- it is beautiful, sturdy and meant to hand down for generations.    As you can see below, the children have been playing with it.   This makes me so happy!

One of our two Nativity calendars.

Shoeboxes

We did two Christmas Shoeboxes this year- one for a boy 6-9yo and one for a girl of the same age.   The kids had lots of fun buying for the shoeboxes at Dollar General- we put in soap, wash cloths, socks, toothbrushes, toothbrush containters & toothpaste, bouncy balls, whistles, crayons & markers, doodle pads & coloring books, candy, combs, playing cards.  Dinosaurs & trucks for the boy box, hair clips & a doll for the girl box.   By the time we were finished we couldn’t even get the lids on!

11/14/11-  Dropping the shoeboxes off at the local church.  (Lyra is there, just to busy walking around to stop for something so silly as having a picture taken!)
