Lemonade Stand

LEMONADE STAND!

(6/27/2011) The kids have been asking to do a lemonade stand for ages.   So I helped them make a good poster, we made 4 quarts of homemade lemonade & drove down to the end of the street.   We used our piano bench and a vintage tablecloth to set up shop.    The kids sold all of the lemonade and made $9.00!    Much fun was had.   We’ve saved our sign so that we can do this again!

We let them take their earnings to Dollar General that evening.   Mary got a little flute, Nathan got a bow & arrow set and Savvy picked out a small (2″) doll set.

Lyra hung out in the shade with her toys & snacks.   Of course, she never moved off the blanket because heaven forbid her precious delicate little skin touch the grass.   She’s not having any of that nonsense.

First Road Trip

First Road Trip- Lexington, NC

(6/22/2011) Lexington is a little town about 40 minutes from where we live.   It’s the Barbecue Capital of North Carolina.    It has such a cute little downtown area- lots of cute shops with wooden floors and quirky things.  The people were very friendly!    We had such a great time on our first road trip- I think we’d like to come back when have more time!  Unfortunately, Nathan ended up with a fever, sore throat and an ear infection.   There was no help for it once we were there other than to stop into a WalGreens and get him some ibuprofin.

First Stop:   The Candy Factory.    Love this store- creaky wooden floors, lots of antiques and quilts and old books and funky little toys.

Some of the displays inside the candy store.

Mary thinks it all looks good!

So hard to choose…

There were so many books here that I wanted!

I settled on this book since we are getting our first piano soon.

I love these old coolers!

Aren’t these candy peas & carrots cute?

There are pigs all over Lexington that are painted by local artists.  We saw this ballerina pig in a local store window.

Window Shopping.

The old courthouse has been turned into the Davidson County Historical Museum.  We had a wonderful time at this museum.   The tour guides were very nice & informative.   We were the only people there so we had them all to ourselves.  The kids especially liked the displays on local Native Americans.

Another pig…

Roo, ready to be OUT of her stroller!

After a full morning of lunch out, window shopping, the candy store & museum we were tired!   We stopped at a very nice little coffee shop to buy milk for Lyra.   The kids and I had some ice water, used the bathroom & visited with the locals for a while.  Everyone was so friendly and thrilled that we came for a day trip- they even offered to take our picture.

Tea Party

(6/16/2011) Mary & Nathan were playing big kid stuff outside and poor Savvy was left out.   She came sobbing to the door, hot & tired & alone.   What to do to turn this day around?   How about a tea party with the little girls?   She was so thrilled!    And Lyra Lou Lou had fun too…

Look at those legs- are they delicious or what??

Facing Forward

(June 16, 2011)

Lyra has moved out of the infant carrier & into a regular car seat.    Such a sad day for Mommy *sniff sniff* but she sure is happy to be facing forward!!

Lyra and the Walker

(June 15, 2011)

With Lyra’s 15 month appointment quickly approaching, the pressure is on to assist Lyra with walking.   She hasn’t expressed much interest so we borrowed a walker from a friend in the hopes that if she got a taste of walking, she might be interested in making some efforts on her own.

Nathan, showing her the walker & trying to convince her to try it out.

What??  Looking cute isn’t my only job???  I have to actually *DO* something?

Nathan giving her a boost up.

She’s off!

Doesn’t she look thrilled?  I love it.

Nature Table…

(June 14, 2011)

The kids have recently been really enjoying bird watching.  After observing a Tufted Titmouse Mary asked if she could draw one.  I got out Great Gramma Mary’s bird books & the water color pencils & let her have a go at it.    She did a beautiful job.

Great Gramma Mary Caster’s bird books…

Something I’ve long wanted to do was a nature table where the children can display all the things they find & collect from outside.  But with no covered porch there really has been no good place to have a nature table.  Then I stumbled across THIS POST!  I couldn’t get to Wal-Mart fast enough to buy a cheap 10 gallon fish tank.   Then the next day I found this little knick-knack box for $3 at a yard sale.  Add a cheap little vase and voila- we have our own version of a nature table!

Clearly, the children have enjoyed filling it up quickly.  There is driftwood and seashells on the left from our trip to Emerald Isle in May.  That is a snake skin from one of our neighbors on the right.    And lots of interesting rocks, shells, seed pods, leaves, pinecones, etc.

The two jars hold rock collections.

A basket holds nature journals for Mary & Nathan and all of our reference books- the standard Comstock that most homeschool Moms own, books on shells, trees, butterflies, rocks & of course, Gramma’s bird books.

Summer Goals for 2011

Summer Goals for 2011

I thought that the process of writing down my summer goals might make them more concrete and it might also increase the likelihood that I will complete them!  I am determined to try to do a few more fun things now that Lyra is a bit older and not in that newborn, 3 nap a day stage.

1. Take the kids on a road trip to Lexington, NC.  (6/22)

2. Help the kids set up a lemonade stand- complete with table & chairs, cookies for sale & a poster. (6/27)

3. Road trip to Mt. Airy and see all the Andy Griffith/Mayberry stuff. (7/27)

4. Help Mary to master money & have Nathan be able to recognize all the coins & how much they are worth.

5. Teach Mary to play chess completely.   Introduce Nathan to chess.

6. Take the three big kids to their first movie in a movie theater.

7. Go to Sonic Happy Hour.

8. Go to the Chick-Fil-A Cow Appreciation Day and really dress them up as cows. (7/8)

9. Ice Cream at Yum Yum’s.  (8/31) Well, we didn’t make it to Yum Yum’s but we did go to The Backyard Grill to get some Homeland Creamery icecream.  That counts, right?

Verbal Snapshot

I like to do these quick verbal snapshots of the kids every so often.

June 22, 2011- Lexington, NC

Mary- 7 years old.   As my Dad said yesterday “she’s such a dollbaby!”.   This is such a perfect description of Mary!  She is just such a nice kid.   She likes everybody, she’s so friendly and just loves meeting people and talking to them.   I think this is one of her most lovely traits.   She continues to really enjoy art- she draws as often as she can, loves to paint, make pot holders, etc.  I’d like to teach her some simple embroidery this summer.   She’s finishing up first grade and did a very good job this year.  Her reading is really improving and she loves to do math.   I would say that her biggest struggle is learning to put things away completely- she is great at cleaning up…until you look more closely and realize that while things LOOK neat & tidy she has not really put things away in their proper place.

Nathan- 6 years old.   He is a talker.  Heaven help us, he talks non-stop, all the time, all day long, more than his three sisters combined!   One thing is for sure, his wife will never complain that he doesn’t talk to her or she doesn’t know what he’s thinking!    Nathan loves science and wants to know the how & why of everything.   He continues to adore Lyra and wait on her hand-and-foot.   There is a reason she is 15 months old and not walking yet.  ;)    There just really isn’t a need with her own personal servant waiting on her 24/7.   I really love to see his tender side come out with Lyra.   She had her 15 month appointment yesterday and Nathan was NOT happy with the nurse for giving “his” baby 3 shots and making her cry.   Nathan needs to work on self-control in a major way- with his mouth and his actions.   I think we will be talking about and memorizing James 3 this year.  heh.   His impulsiveness gets him in trouble- he does things he knows are wrong, and he’s always sorry later but he has a very difficult time doing the right thing *in the moment*.

Savvy- 3 years old.  FEISTY.   I had a good laugh the other day when my friend said that Savannah doesn’t know her place in the family- she acts like a typical first born child, not the third!     For sure, no one is going to push this girl around.    Like all good Fairchilds, she is a terrible tease.   The problem is in teaching her that there is a time and a place for it and knowing when to quit.    She started preschool a few weeks ago and just loves to do her “school work”.    She picks up so much just by listening to us- she can know recite Galatians 5:22-23 (The Fruit of the Spirit) and just this morning she recited Christina Rosetti’s “Let’s Be Merry” and “What Do They Do?”- two of her favorite poems.  She also knows “Grizzly Bear” and Ogden Nash’s “The Panther”.

Lyra- 15 months.  She is FAST.  The minute she hears an open gate she is out of it like a streak of lightning and heading for either the stairs (which she can climb in about 3 seconds), or the bathroom.   She just started standing up on her own and using the ottoman or the walker to push around the living room.  If we can get Nathan to stop fetching for her all the time, I think she would start walking pretty soon.   She has the most glorious nut brown skin- and the more time we spend at the pool, the browner she gets, even with sunscreen.  I love it.    She is delightful baby- I could have a hundred more like her!

Preschool!

(June 7, 2011)

Savvy started Preschool today!    She has been so excited, asking every day when she can start, so I finally gave in & got out her preschool books.    She is just thrilled.    Savannah’s preschool consists of the Rod & Staff ABC series of workbooks, reading lots of ABC and 123 counting books, using her Bambino LUK, Leap Frog Scribble & Write and other preschool activities like PLAN toys ABC letters & cards, Discovery Toys Counting Insects game, Oreo shape match-ups, sequencing cards, etc.    She also is listening in on our Tapestry of Grace studies, poetry & scripture memorization, classical music & fine arts appreciation- it is amazing what they pick up just by observing.

Can you tell she’s excited??
