NC Zoo

Thursday, 7/30/2009

At 7:50am I spontaneously decided that a day trip to the NC Zoo was just the thing to do on a hot, humid summer day.  What was I thinking??? We were out the door by 8:45 with all three children dressed and lunches packed.   We had a wonderful day at the zoo.  We got there around 9:20am and left around 2:00- it took 5 hours to see HALF of the zoo and eat lunch.   That place is huge!   Maybe next time we’ll see the North American side of the zoo.

Savvy spent the entire carousel ride like this- she was not.quite.sure. about it.

Crowned Victoria Pigeon- just gorgeous.

More Planning

Planning and more planning….

I finished my planning for September-December a few weeks ago.  Last week I finished my “To Photocopy” and my “To Print” lists.

The BIG binder below covers the first 9 weeks of Year 1 for Tapestry of Grace.  It’s large because it includes all levels from Kindergarten through highschool.    On top are two activity books- one that goes along with TOG and the other is a craft book.  Mary loves to do crafts and I am not a crafty Mom.  I’ve determined to do better this year.    I’ve gone through and picked out 8-12 crafts per holiday/season- enough to do about 1 per week for the school year and I’ve bought almost all the supplies I need.

I condensed all of the above down to this little pile.

I made weekly packets for the first nine weeks.  Each packet contains photocopied pages from anything that I needed/wanted to read aloud or use for review from the BIG binder, any maps, worksheets, etc. that we need that week.    Also any recipes/directions/info for any of our projects.  For example, one week we will be measuring out Noah’s Ark in the road so that week’s packet has a print out of the dimensions for Noah’s Ark.  Another week we are making salt maps so I have the salt dough recipe included that week.  Etc.  Also, our weekly craft sheet is included in each packet.

My goal was to be able to pull one packet each week along with our read alouds- I wanted to make things as simple and easy as possible.  I’ll be schooling two kids this fall and keeping up with a busy 2 year old so the more pre-planning I can do, the better.

I have not planned past December because when I bought my “used” Tapestry of Grace, it was basically new.  Unit 1 was already in a binder with sheet protectors but units 2,3,4 and all of the lapbooks are still in their shrinkwrap.  Just in case TOG doesn’t go well with us, I thought I’d be able to get a better price selling it if I could say that the majority of the curriculum was still new in the shrinkwrap.   We may take a mini-Fall break sometime in October or November, after I see how TOG is working for us, and plan from January onward.

Stick House

July 23, 2009:

Mary got the bright idea to build a “stick house” a la “The Three Little Pigs”.   Nathan went into the natural area and dragged out the large supporting limb all by himself!   Mary collected most of the sticks.  I helped them get the house started and when Kip got home he helped them finish it.

I LOVE THIS PICTURE of Mary looking up at Kip- isn’t it fabulous???

Fire Pit

For my birthday/Mother’s Day, Kip agreed to put in a fire pit in a little clearing in the trees.   He finally finished it (mostly! we still want to add some mulch around the seating area and some pea gravel right around the fire ring) last weekend and we have had SO MUCH FUN having campfires almost every night.

Mary- 5 1/2 years old.

Notice Savannah in the background holding the box of matches???   Not one second after I snapped this picture she chucked the whole box of matches into the Firepit.

See them in there?

She’s got a bruise and a bit of a goose egg on her forehead- we’ve got no clue how she did it.

Picture of the new fire pit area.   On the left side, Kip used an old ladder and some scrap lumber to make the log holder that’s behind the hammock.   The logs around the fire were from a tree the previous owner had cut down.   She’d left them in a huge pile on the side of the house and when we were having the landscaping done, I asked Kip to save these in hopes of using them as seats around a fire pit someday.   They worked out perfectly.   That’s a chimnea on the far right.   We’d still like to get some Tikki Torches to put around the perimeter to ward of mosquitos in the evening.

Our neighbors brought us over 1/2 a watermelon that night.   Following are a bunch of pictures of Nathan and Savvy devouring the watermelon.

Notice she’s eating the rind.  Yuck!

I love this picture of Kip with Nathan and Savvy.

TeePee

I  Love Craigslist!

I saw this teepee listed for sale a few days ago and snapped it up!    The kids are having a big time playing Indians.    Nathan has been big into “reading” Indian books lately and I’ve been trying to get them to understand that Daddy is 1/2 Indian and that they are 1/4 Indian.

Not the best picture of Nathan as he’s being silly, but a good  picture of the teepee.

What a handsome boy… but, wow, he REALLY needs a haircut!

I’m not sure what is up with this pouty lip but it sure is a fabulous one.

Even he can’t stand the pouty lip…

Busy Weekend

We recently joined the local pool and spent three days there last week.  I had my regular sitter here on other morning while I ran 8 errands in the course of three hours.   By Friday, the house was much more of a wreck than I am comfortable with so we stayed home from the pool.
Over the course of three days I have…

Gone through the pile of mail, bills, flyers, magazines, junk mail, cards, etc. awaiting me on the counter.

Filed at least 3 months worth of paperwork

Balanced the checkbook

Paid all the bills

Washed, dried, folded and put away 5 or 6 loads of laundry.

Washed and changed the sheets on Nathan’s bed.

Gave the kitchen, laundry room and bathroom a thorough sweep & mop.

Cleaned the bathroom.

Gone through the piles of cards and correspondence and dealt with them all.

Helped Mary clean her room and restore it to order.

Touch up painting in Nathan’s room and the Living room.

Finished ALL of my “TO PHOTOCOPY” list and found and printed everything on my “RESEARCH” list for the upcoming school year.  (well, September-December)

Cleaned the dining room and restored it to order.    This is the room that Mary and Nathan use to play with any of their “big kid” toys that have small parts we want to keep away from Savvy.  Dollhouse, playmobil, etc.  Also, Nathan’s hotwheels are in here.  This room can get to be quite the mess after a week or so.

Thorgoughly cleaned all the kitchen counters.

Made 2 pounds of homemade meatballs and froze them for the coming months.

Sorted through ALL of the children’s clothes and made complete lists of what they already have for the coming winter and what they need and in what sizes so I am ready for consignment sale shopping (starts next weekend!).

Tackled my long to-do list or random things such as call State Farm Bank,  find and fill out the necessary form for returning Kip’s workshirts, find Netflix movies and return them, sign, address & mail birthday cards, etc.

FINALLY, the house feels back in the order that I like to have it in.   I’m planning to spend Monday-Thursday at the pool and I can’t wait. :D

Have a great week- pictures coming soon!

Cousins!

More pictures from 7/3/2009

Celebrating Gramma’s Birthday

July 3, 2009

As I’m sure I’ve mentioned numerous times before,  Mary was named after my grandmother- Mary Elizabeth Caster Fairchild.   She was such a wonderful, Godly lady.   I was just thrilled when Mary was born- I had a blue-eyed little girl to name after Gramma Mary.

She passed away in November, 2000.   Every year since then, I make Buckeyes on her birthday as a way of remembering her. I make Buckeyes because I have this really clear memory of spending the night at her house one COLD winter night in Upstate New York.  It was early evening, pitch dark out and I remember the warm glow of the kitchen and the two of us rolling the little peanut butter balls and dipping them in the chocolate.   Such a fun night.  :)

Here are pictures of my three kids helping me to make Buckeyes on Friday, July 3rd.   She would have been 89 years old.

Mary (5 years old) and Nathan (4 years old).  The large tupperware bowl we used to mix the ingredients was Gramma Mary’s bread bowl.   I use it all the time and it makes me smile.

Who Will Lead the Children? The comments on this post are *really* good- don’t miss them!

Where’s Mary????

The other night, Kip and I went upstairs to go to bed and I did my last minute bed check of the children.

Nathan? Check.  Tuck the covers back around him.

Savvy? Check.  All cozed up with Giraffy.

Mary? Not in her bed.  Not under her bed.  Not in her closet.   She’s not in the school room.  Not in the hallway bathroom.  Not in Savvy’s room or our room or our bathroom.  No where to be found.   We’ve just come upstairs so we know she’s not in the kitchen, living room, laundry room, or study.

By this point, Kip and I have been searching for her for about 10-15 minutes.

And honestly?

I’m starting to panic. I’m starting to have visions of Elizabeth Smart. I’m really starting to panic.

Empty bed.   Where could she be?  Did someone kidnap her out of her room????

I say to Kip- you know, the only room we haven’t checked is the dining room.   So, I start to head downstairs to check the dining room.  Kip was in our bedroom and as I got several stairs down, he said something to me.  I turned my head to look through the stair banisters and  into the bedroom to answer him.   Because I’m several stairs down, I’m at eye level with the floor when I turn and look through the banisters.   And guess what I see?

One of our neighbors had been setting off fireworks.  Mary is TERRIFIED of fireworks.   She had grabbed her pillow, her meme and crawled under our bed and fallen asleep.   Because the other children were asleep, when Kip and I were searching and calling for Mary, we were doing it quietly.   And because she was asleep, she didn’t hear us calling her.
