1/29/09 “Beard” and Children’s Museum

Nathan’s “Beard”

Lately Nathan is obsessed with having a beard like his Daddy.  So he doesn’t want me to wash his chocolate milk mustache off his face OR he’ll do things like this:

This beard is the result of a brown marker….

Children’s Museum- 1/31/09

For Christmas our wonderful babysitter, Barbara, gave us a family pass to the Children’s Museum.   We got up early this morning and were there when they opened at 9am in order to beat the crowds.  It was empty and quiet until a little after 10am.   By 11am it was very crowded and quite loud so we left about then.   We had a great time though!  Savannah loved the baby area- there were all kinds of things to practice climbing on.

LOOK!  She’s crawling on all 4′s!  WOOHOO!    She is juuuust starting to do this- she still “army” crawls 95% of the time but every so often she’ll pop up on all 4′s and really crawl.

Mary, playing weatherman.

The big kids LOVED the airplane cockpit!

The firetruck was also a hit.

I like this picture of Nathan…

Savannah playing in the sand box.

How cute is Nathan’s t-shirt??  It says “Conserve water, Drink Chocolate Milk”.   I think it’s his favorite t-shirt beside his superhero shirt.

Playing with the baggage claim area next to the airplane.

They’ve redone the Grocery Store area since we were last there over three years ago.  It’s beautiful.  Savvy loved it.

Takin’ a break…

More fun in the airplane…

Homeschooling… Planning for Next Year

It’s that time of year again…

We pay for homeschooling out of our tax return, so it’s that time to start planning for next school year.

I’ve just finished reading The Well-Trained Mind and enjoyed it very much.  I’ve also read some of Raymond and Dorothy Moore’s work on the value of starting a child’s education later- closer to 8,9,10 years old.  I *DO* think the Moore’s have some valid points but I’m not sure it would work for our family.  I’ve also been VERY inspired lately by Mt. Hope Chronicles series on homeschooling.

So, lately, (prior to reading TWTM) I’ve been feeling like I’m not doing enough schoolwork with Mary.  Or, not as much as I’d like to be doing.  It’s one thing to do very little school if you are an Unschooler or if you follow the Moore’s “better late than early” approach.   It’s entirely different to not be doing “enough” school because you haven’t got around to it.  It’s a heart issue.

I really like a lot of things about the Classical approach and am also a fan of the Charlotte Mason method of teaching.   I think Tapestry of Grace is the perfect combination of the two and would work well for our family.   Here’s the rub:   Tapestry is VERY expensive.   We don’t have a library nearby so I would be buying ALL the books that go with the curriculum.

I just can’t decide if I should buy TOG for next school year or if I should continue another year with our eclectic approach.

Here’s what we’re currently doing:

Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons

BOB books

Math-U-See Primer

The Light and the Glory (History- almost done with this)

Men of Science, Men of God (Science)

Usborne’s Complete First Book of Nature (Science)

Handwriting Without Tears

I also have on hand: Christian Light Education’s First Grade Language Arts program, Rod and Staff’s “Going on Eagerly” and “Climbing to Good Engish”, Story of the World and Mastering Mathematics.

So, I certainly have enough, curriculum-wise, to carry us on for another year or so.

BUT- I don’t feel we are doing enough History or Geography.    We don’t do any projects either.   And Tapestry would take care of all that and it looks like so much fun.

I’d like to add in some art instruction, spelling, grammar as well.    I’m considering purchasing Spelling Power and Apologia Science for next year.   First Language Lessons, for sure.   Kip would like to teach Mary drawing as he is good at that sort of thing.  I want to get some of Right Start’s math manipulatives and few of the math units from Math Mammoth.  Specifically, time, measurement and money.  And I want to set some money aside for when we go to the Homeschool Convention and Curriculum Fair in May…

I wish there were a local homeschool store that carried all this stuff- somewhere that I could go and just sit down and LOOK at everything.   I know that is what convention is for but that doesn’t help me now as I’m working on the budget.  Plus, convention is so crowded and there is so much to see, it’s hard to really sit down and have lots of time to just look at a curriculum.  I’ve heard that there is a homeschool store in Charlotte, I may drive down there to have a visit with my Mom and spend some time at the store.

Mary, working with her pattern blocks last week.

She did it!

CLIMBING!

As I’ve blogged about BEFORE, we’ve been CONCERNED about Savannah’s gross motor delays.

She’s been making good progress and look what she did today- she CLIMBED ON TOP OF SOMETHING for the first time!   Not a big deal to most kids but I think this is a very big thing for her!

She climbed up on the fireplace hearth and Mary and Nathan were SO excited for her- that was very sweet!   Of course, we had to take pictures:

Company

You know you’ve had to much company when….

your neighbor calls you to find out if everything is okay and has there been a death in the family? (Because there have been so many cars here and people coming and going even at late hours and early in the morning)

your kids want to know “who’s coming today?”  as if it is the normal thing to have company coming over every day.

My Dad and his wife, Sharon, were here visiting Thursday through Saturday morning. Then they went to my sister’s house until Monday.  Sunday my mother arrived to look at houses and came for a short visit.  My Uncle Bill and his wife, Celeste, arrived Sunday evening from Upstate NY. After dinner, my sister, her son, her boyfriend, Bob, his daughter Kileigh, Dad, Sharon, my brother Mike and his girlfriend, Shira, all came and joined our family and Uncle Bill and Celeste for dessert.   (That’s 15 people Sunday night)   Then this morning everyone (except my brother and Shira- they went back to Charlotte last night) came again for breakfast at 8:30am (that’s 13 for breakfast).

We were all up late Sunday night and as usual when Fairchilds are together, there was much telling of stories and laughing and everyone was talking at once and we had several heated but friendly arguments.

Here’s some pictures from the past few days.

My Dad (Pap Pap) and Savannah had some serious love going on- I don’t think he hardly put her down his entire visit.

Pap Pap pushing the big kids on the swings-  My Dad is the best swing-pusher because he will push you as HIGH as the swing can go which is, of coarse, the most fun.

Mary and Uncle Bill.   I’m not sure who was having more fun….

BROTHERS-  My Dad on the left and Uncle Bill on the right.

Dad and Sharon with Mary, Nathan and Savvy.   Excuse Savvy’s grumpy look- she had a mouthful of cinnamon raisin bread.

Front row- Left to right-  Nathan, Mary, Alec, Aunt Celeste

Back row- Left to right- Savannah, Kelly, Dad, Sarah, Uncle Bill

Kip and I with Uncle Bill and Celeste.   This was their first visit to our home and we were so thrilled to have them here.

Inauguration Day

We hurried quick-fast through lunch so we could watch the inauguration.  Here’s a few pictures of the children watching the President say the Oath of Office.

SNOW DAY!

It snowed an inch or two overnight- the children were thrilled!   It was outside to play this morning and then a special treat of hot chocolate with lunch.   Much fun.

Catching snowflakes on their tongues.

The view from the front door this morning.

Mary, watching the snow.

Nathan, elbow-deep in Playmobil Pirates.

Savvy’s new trick- “walking” on her knees.    (No real walking yet)

Savvy, investigating the camera case.

Big kids, ready to go outside.

Puddin’ acting crazy.  ;)

More Nappage

Who’s Missing Her Morning Nap?

Brace yourselves…

Get a spoon- This baby is so delicious you’re going to want to eat her up!

Savannah Marie-  Tuesday, 1/13/09                                17 months old

(I noticed she was playing veeeery quietly in the living room.   Usually not such a good sign.  However.  I peeped in there and saw this most precious sight.  My word.  Isn’t she beautiful?)

Look at her gorgeous, soft little cheeks.

And those little feet.  Those tiny, kissable little toes.

My House Lost 50 POUNDS!

Or so it seems anyway!  We finally took the time last weekend to get all the Christmas decorations put up.   I’m never a big fan of “spring” cleaning but there is something  about January and putting away the Christmas decorations that inspires me to do a big spring cleaning in the winter.   Further inspiring me this year is that my Uncle (Dad’s brother) and his wife are coming to visit on 1/25.  They will be spending the night on their way to Florida.  Then two weeks later my cousin, his wife and their four boys are coming to visit Saturday-Tuesday.   It is the first time my Uncle or my cousin have been to our house.  (They both live in Upstate NY where I am from)   SO- I have been a cleaning whirlwind this week.

Dining Room- rearranged a little bit, swept, dusted, put away Christmas tree, new tablecloth on the table.

Study- Moved chair and ottoman up to the Guest Room.  It gives us more room in here and it will be nice for guests to have a place to sit other than the bed.   Dusted, swept, re-organized homeschool shelves.   Looks great.

Entranceway- thoroughly swept, dusted and spiffed up with some new pictures.   (I realized that we don’t have any pictures of Puddin’ out.  Just the big kids.  I haven’t had frames, so that’s why.  I took some pictures I wanted to frame of Savannah, one of all three kids and one of our entire family with me to Kohl’s and got some nice frames.  I feel so much better now!)

OTHER Stuff- we cleaned out all the cabinets underneath the entertainment center and relocated all the kids games to there, cleaned out the toy closet (threw a bunch of stuff away and reorganized what we had left), spent 3 hours dealing with paperwork and filing, wiped down the chair-rails, re-did the kid shelves in the living room, cleaned Savannah’s room.   I tell you, I’m on a roll.

I’ve still got some work to do in the kitchen and laundry room.  I need to do the baseboards and some of the windows.  And I need to straighten the guest room and get it ready for company.

On to the good stuff!  Pictures from this week-

Monday, 1/12/09

Mary has been on a huge puzzle kick lately.  Here she is working through some of them.

These aren’t the best pictures- a little dark and blurry.   Here’s Savvy enjoying her independent play time.

When I redid the toy shelves in the living room I made up a book basket for Savvy.   She loves to tuck back in this corner with a stack of books and just sit quietly and look at them.   We find her like this pretty often.   I think it is so cute.

Mary and Nathan playing outside.

Tuesday, 1/13/09    It was pretty chilly on Tuesday but they had a good time outside playing with bubbles.

Another Update on Savvy

Savvy had her eval on Monday, 1/5/09.

Savvy has made HUGE progress lately.  In a two week time period from Saturday, 12/20/08 through Saturday, 1/3/09 she started:

Climbing up the stairs

creeping around the furniture

walking while holding our hand

letting go and standing independently (only about 2 seconds before she falls, but still, I think this is good)

climbing a little bit.

That’s a lot in two weeks!   The physical therapist came out and evaluated her  on Monday 1/5/09 and said she has very low muscle tone in her legs in addition to the “looseness” in her hips, which we already knew about.  She scored lower in some unexpected areas and I was at first concerned.  However, the PT said that her weakness in the Gross Motor Skills area are affecting her scores in Fine Motor, Cognitive and Language.   Here are her scores in the various areas they tested and also an explanation of how the gross motor skills are affecting the other scores.

Fine Motor:  15 months (Because she only army crawls she has weak hand strength.  She doesn’t crawl up on her knees and hands and so doesn’t get those hand muscles built up.  So she was unable to do one or two of the tasks the PT gave her because she didn’t have the hand strength.   It’s funny because one thing her pediatrician ALWAYS mentions it what good fine motor skills she has. )

Gross Motor: 11 months

Cognitive: 15 months (Again, because Gross Motor has affected Fine Motor skills, she was unable to complete two of the tasks on the cognitive assessment.  The PT said though that really, it’s not that she didn’t know how to do those tasks, she just didn’t have the motor skills to complete them.  She did not feel that she was truly behind in any way cognitively.  It was more about that specific task and her hand strength as opposed to any true cognitive ability.)

Language: 15 months (PT said that if you think about yourself, as an adult, when you are trying to do something physically demanding how you often clench your jaw or hold you mouth very stiffly.  She thinks that Savvy is doing this- walking/trying to walk are difficult for her because of her hips and muscle tone so she’s really concentrating hard and those “holding” her mouth stiffly.   So that means she doesn’t babble as much as is expected so she lost a few points for that.  She does have the appropriate amount of words though, for her age, so that was good.

Self Help: 18 months

Social/Emotional: 18 months

Based on her Gross Motor score, she qualifies to have a PT sent out to the house to work with her.   However, she’s made so much progress in two weeks time that we decided to hold off on any interventions for a month and to reevalute then.
