Contradictions…Confessions of an Anti-Soccer Mom

This post is a study in contradictions. I LOVE this short article: Confessions of an Anti-Soccer Mom

Seriously, it’s worth the few minutes it will take to read it.

It so perfectly sums up almost everything I think about enrolling your kids in activities, lessons, etc.

THAT SAID: My kids are taking swimming lessons this week! They were supposed to have private lessons next week to the tune of $45 each or $90 total. However. The swim teacher called and said there had been some huge scheduling mix up with the private lessons and the camp going on a week longer than expected. Translation: All private lessons have been canceled. I was pretty disappointed. Then she said there were a couple slots open in their group preschool class that had started on Monday night (this was Tuesday morning). We could still join those if we wanted to and since we had already missed one night and there had been the scheduling snafu, we could enroll both kids for $35. What a steal. It’s 7:15-7:45pm which I thought was going to be to late but has actually worked out okay- Kip gets home, we have dinner, clean it up, get the kids dressed and head out for lessons by 7:00 or 7:05. The pool is only 4 miles from our house so we can get there in about 5 minutes. We’re back home by 8 or so and have the kids in bed by 8:20 or 8:30. There’s no rushing about and we come home to a picked up kitchen.

Worst.Camping.Trip.EVER.

Ohmyword. We had the worst camping trip ever. Honestly, I felt sorry for the people camped next to us. They must have thought we were camping newbies instead of experienced campers who’ve been camping for 10 years or more.

When we got up on Friday(4th of July)  it just started off bad. You know how that is sometimes- you can just tell it’s going to be a bad day? I even said to Kip- you know, maybe we shouldn’t go. huh. Unfortunately we went. And bad things happened.

#1. Rough Napping situation. Little/No Naps=Cranky children.

#2. I burned dinner. As in, charcoal briquets burned. As in hockey pucks burned. Completely burned and ruined. I never burn dinner. I know how to cook over an open fire. We were supposed to have Marinated Italian Chicken, Fingerling Potatoes and Onions, Marinated Veggies- Red, Yellow and Orange Peppers and Tomatoes. The only thing that made it out alive were the peppers. We ended up using the hotdogs that I had planned for Saturday nights dinner.

#3. Savannah threw up twice.

#4. And here’s the really bad one. So, earlier in the day we had gone down to see the Dog Costume Contest and Mary had been skipping along down the road singing “we’re going on an adventure, we’re going on an adventure….” remember that for later in the story.

So- after the burned dinner fiasco, we were cleaning up the hotdog mess, putting away the condiments and getting ready to go down to the live music concert on the lake. We had some three wick citronella candles going on the picnic table to ward off the bugs. Kip blew out the candles and then turned around to do something- throw away a piece of trash or pick up something, I don’t know. I was also standing right there just doing general pick up. Mary started to climb up onto the seat of the picnic table and fell off. When she started to fall, she reached up to grab the table and instead grabbed the candle that had just been blown out. She pulled it over onto herself dumping hot wax on top of her head and all down her neck, shoulders and back. She was screaming- it was the most horrible sound I’ve ever heard. Luckily, we had a whole gallon jug of water sitting right there on the table and I picked it up and dumped it over her head. Pulled her clothes off, grabbed a towel and our bathroom bag (both were sitting right there) and took off running for the bathroom. I put her in under the shower and started scrubbing her head, neck, shoulders and back. The worst area was on the back of her head- kind of the crown area. Wax was at least a 1/4 inch thick. It was holding the heat in and Mary was beyond hysterical. The warm water from the shower softened the wax some so I dumped my shampoo on her head and started scrubbing and scratching away the wax. The shampoo was dripping in her eyes and which made her scream all the more because it was stinging her eyes. She was beyond hysterical- totally nonsensical. At one point she was sobbing/screaming and said “MOMMY! THIS IS THE SADDEST ADVENTURE EVER!” I was so upset, I was sick. It was all I could do to not cry and throw up myself but I thought if I descended into hysteria it would only add to her distress. It was awful. Eventually I was able to get the majority of the wax out between the shower, the shampoo and a fine tooth comb. She was NOT BURNED, thank God.

#5. After the above horribleness, we went back to the campsite. Mary was calmed down and still wanting to see the band and fireworks. My brother had decided to come up and camp with us so Kip took the two big kids down the the lake for the band and fireworks. I was supposed to wait for my brother to get there and then we would all meet down at the lake and watch fireworks together. My brother, his girlfriend and I got down to the lake just as the fireworks were starting. I spent ten minutes looking everywhere and couldn’t find Kip and the kids. Turned out that when the fireworks started Mary FLIPPED OUT. Just lost it again. She was terrified of the noise. So Kip put the big kids back in the van, drove them back up to the campsite and put them to bed. We must have just missed each other. So Mary had yet another traumatic event and Kip and I didn’t even get to watch the fireworks together.

We got up Saturday morning and, instead of staying until Sunday as planned, packed everything up and were out of there by 8:40am. We stopped for some breakfast and to run into my favorite gift shop and were still home by 11:30am on Saturday morning.

Puddy, in all her gorgeous cuteness.

There was SOME fun during the camping trip: The campground was great. We always camp at Raccoon Holler in Glendale Springs, NC. Beautiful campground, clean and quiet. Bathrooms are very clean and have individual hot showers. Outlets at the sink. Because even when camping I’ve got to shower, wash my hair, dry and fix it. :) Here’s some pictures from their website: Pictures Link

For Fourth Of July, they had kids activities starting at 10am, which we missed. Watermelon eating contest, face painting, games, etc. Later they had a Dog Costume Contest.

Photobucket

In the afternoon they had a Golf Cart Parade- I have to say, I wasn’t expecting much but it was AWESOME! They probably had 40 golf carts or more all decorated to the hilt. They threw tons of candy. Mary and Nathan were thrilled.

That night they had live bluegrass music and fireworks on the lake. Which would have been nice. ;) Oh- and the town of Glendale Springs has “Christmas in July” that weekend so everyone has yard sales, etc. One of the golf carts in the parade had a Santa on it. Mary and Nathan thought they were seeing the REAL Santa and were just beside themselves. The golf cart driver even stopped for a minute so the kids could talk to Santa. I thought that was nice.

However.  It will be a LONG, LONG, LONG time before this family goes camping again.

Links, Links, Links

I’ve been saving up some good stuff to share!

1. There are still some nutcases around who oppose interracial marriage. The Ethics of Interracial Marriage will help you to have a good solid answer ready. Funny thing- ever noticed how those who are opposed to interracial marriage almost never have a problem with asian-white, hispanic-white, etc.??? Several times I’ve had someone try to make the case against interracial marriage to me but they are FLOORED when I tell them that I’m in one- Kip is 1/2 Native American. heh. People are crazy.

2. Are you worried about lead paint or other toxic chemicals in your baby/child’s toys? Do you just HATE all the loud, plasticky junk that passes for toys? Tired of all the cheap, poorly made toys that are out there? If so, check out Oompa Toys or Moolka ToysMoosekiss Toys is another good one and is run by a Mom living in Apex, NC. TOY SNOB has a great post: A HANDFUL OF REASONS TO LOVE OOMPA that tells you a little more about why Oompa is so awesome. And the same can be said of Moolka and Moosekiss.

3. Suburban CEO has a great graph entitled Then Vs. Now that really highlights the differences between being a SAHM now and a generation or two ago. So much of the “now” catagory really struck home with me.

4. This is a neat meal planning site- RELISH! For only $7.00 a month! (CHEAP!) they provide you with 15 meals a week to choose from. You pick five meals and they give you the recipes and grocery list already done. They have a variety of catagories: crockpot, kid friendly, low calorie, morning prep, quick, simple gourmet and vegetarian. All meals have been pre-tested and take 30 minutes or less prep. No expensive ingredients either- 5 meals and sides cost less than $85 a week. I haven’t used the site but it does look like it would be helpful to busy working moms or moms who just aren’t that into the whole cooking, meal-planning thing.

5. Have you discovered BOSSY yet? I swear I love her blog- it’s my new favorite. Tales from Labor and Delivery is beyond hysterical. (Hat tip to Sarah for the link). And surely, surely everyone is reading Confessions of a Pioneer Woman by now.

6 . iCrave has some really neat stuff on it. I am so in love with The Busy Roll that it’s crazy. I plan on ordering one soon. I adore the wool balls on there. She makes some felted play balls- I’d love to order a pair for Savvy at some point.

I’m Back!

I’m still in the process of switching from HSB to WordPress but it should be done soon.

One of the big difficulties I’m  having lately that keeps  me from posting more often is posting pictures.  It takes FOREVER.   It is a seriously arduous task.  First I download them off the camera into my photo software.  Then I have to upload pictures from the software program into photobucket.  Then copy and paste from photobucket.   If I want to send pictures out to family and friends I have to upload them AGAIN to the Kodak site.    There just HAS to be a better way to do this.

Suggestions anyone?  At this point I’d even be willing to purchase some software/program/etc. if it would allow me to download pictures from camera and have them ready to publish, post on blog or send out to family members.

I’ve got some posts in the can so I’ll be posting more regularly.

ETA:  I just received Savvy’s birthday presents from Oompa.  The presents that I ordered on Monday and thought might take a while to get here.  Did I mention I also got free shipping?  Oompa ROCKS.

And the Creanimaux blocks I ordered?  They were the thing I was the least sure about and they are so *awesome*.   Bigger than I anticipated, beautiful color.  They’re just gorgeous.  I’m soooo glad I got them- I think they’re perfect for a First Birthday gift.   I’m thrilled with the walker/stroller we got as well.   It’s hard to believe she’s only 1 month and 10 days away from being a year old….

Q & A

Questions and Answers:

I’ve had some questions sent to me, prior to my closing of the comments, that I thought I’d answer publically since several people have asked.

1. Why Did We Sell Our Previous Home and Move? Well, this is a many part answer.

#1: The most important reason that we moved when we did was because the huge tract of land across the street was sold and being developed into an apartment complex.  This was going to mean lots of noise and construction for a year or more and then a LOT of increased driving traffic and foot traffic.  We had loved how quiet our little deadend street was and that was quickly going to end.

#2:  As much as we loved our street and neighbors, Mary was the first baby born in 20 years or so on the street.   Because we plan to homeschool, we really wanted to be in a neighborhood where there would be other kids around to play with- at least in the afternoons.

#3: Our house was plenty big enough for us and the two babies- BUT- we knew we wanted at least four children and we knew we planned on homeschooling so we felt that in the long run, the house wasn’t going to work for us.   We bought our current house with those criteria in mind- we plan to stay here for the rest of our lives.  There’s four bedrooms- ours, and we plan to have a girls room, a boys room and a guest bedroom.  We have  large bonus room over the garage that we will eventually turn into a homeschool room.

#4.  In hindsight, we can see how God really was working in our move.  Thank the LORD that we moved when we did.  About two months after we moved, we went back to our old house to get my great grandmother’s rose bush.  The new owners had allowed us to leave it until we were settled in and it was a better time to transplant it.  SO- anyway, we went back to get the rose bush and the wife asked us if we moved because of the neighbor???  We had no clue what she was talking about.  It seems that right after we moved out our elderly neighbors had gone to Las Vegas and allowed their son to move into their home.  Their son who is a convicted pedophile and just got out of a 20 year prison sentence.

I am so thankful that we moved when we did- I would have felt like a prisoner in our home with him across the street- I would have felt like the kids couldn’t be outside, etc.  ugh, ugh, ugh.   SO GLAD we moved!

2. Why Don’t I Nurse The Baby Anymore?
Unfortunately my milk dried up.  I was able to nurse for nine months but was getting nothing by the end.  I was very disappointed.  Savvy was also increasingly not interested.   I’ve heard of babies self-weaning and that seems to be a part of it.  She also seems less and less interested in the bottle lately so she may be weaning herself from that as well.

3. Do I cloth diaper? Ummm, no.  Honestly, it’s just something that never appealed to me.  I never even considered it.  But then, lately I’ve been reading about it on Emily and Sarah’s blogs and I’ve been reconsidering it.   I may do it the next time around.   I could even try switching now as I’ve still got another year of Savvy in diapers.  We’ll see.  I’m thinking about it.

4. Do I have a favorite child?
huh.  weird question.   Anyway.   It’s funny because over the past few months I’ve been accused of favoring Mary over the others, Nathan over the others and most recently Savvy over the others.  I’m taking it as a good sign that someone thinks each one of the kids is favored.  people are strange.

Savvy’s Birthday Gifts

It’s hard to believe but Savvy’s First Birthday will be in just six short weeks.   I went ahead and ordered her birthday gifts today.  Most of it is coming from the West Coast  area and I know that shipping coming from West of the Mississippi River has been slowed down due to flooding.    Six weeks should be plenty of time for everything to arrive though.

I ordered her this beautiful “Heavy Baby” from Joy’s Waldorf Dolls.   They smell heavenly and the weight of the doll is nice.  We got the 12″ doll in lavender.

Here’s the description: Used therapeutically worldwide, a weighted doll has a settling and reassuring quality. Heavy Baby is a weighted, rounded bottom (no legs), bunting style baby which makes it ideal for the young child. Filled with millet, and made with all natural fibers, it will bring a subtle quality of weight and warmth to the child who plays with it. Heavy Baby is just right for the youngster who needs to “Lug”, or for the child who needs extra sensory attention and just a lovely doll to simply hold and pats it’s bottom. This is truly an archetypal “Waldorf Doll” worthy of any child or adult.

I’ve had this in mind for months- it’s the HABA Doll Pram- I love that it’s all natural wood so no worries about chemicals, stains, paint, etc.  It can be used as a doll stroller, a walker or just a wagon to haul things.   It’s very sturdy.   Not crazy about the blue pillows though.  I’m going to search around for some nice pink, girly type fabric and then take the pillows and fabric to the most excellent tailor/sewer person in the world- Mr. Nadir.  I’ll have him make a slip cover with a zipper closure for it.

Photobucket

I also ordered her these HABA Creanimaux Blocks, both sets- I thought ALL the kids would enjoy them and they would last for years and years.  We allready have a set of regular blocks but I think this set will be a fun addition.

Photobucket
Lastly, I ordered Savvy this little Chelona Wooden Book- so many of our board books have really gotten mangled.  I can read them to the baby but she really can’t have them to play with herself- they just get chewed on and ruined.   So, I got her a book that she can have and play with and there’s no worries about it being chewed to death.  Also, all natural so no worries about stains, chipping paint, lead or other nasty chemicals.
