Thoughts on Conference

Homeschool Conference 2013

Kip and I have made it a priority to get away together once a year, usually to a homeschool conference.   In 2011 and 2012 we went to the South East Homeschool Conference in Greenville, SC.   This year we decided to try a different conference- we went to Teach Them Diligently in Spartanburg, SC.   I came away from TTD with mixed feelings- I am pretty sure we will not go back next year unless there is a speaker we *really* want to see.

#1: The Speakers:   We discovered some new favorites this year- we loved Mark Hamby and Lou Priolo.    Both were dynamic, engaging speakers.   Debra Bell was also new to me and I really enjoyed her session on Raising Independent Learners.   She gave me some practical steps on moving in that direction in the next year or two.    We also saw Hal & Melanie Young again and enjoyed them as we always do.   I really wanted to hear their last session on Saturday on Teaching Discernment but Kip was not feeling well & we were anxious to see the little girls before they went to bed that night so we left early but are planning on buying the mp3.    There were several that we really did not enjoy, which was disappointing.   Some were so completely off-topic or vague that we did not come away with anything useful.   (if you want to know who they were, pm me)

#2: The Venue: The venue was very disappointing overall.   It was in a run down area of town.   The layout was very awkward.   Many of the session rooms were quite small and we missed some speakers we wanted to see because the rooms were allready so full there wasn’t even standing room left.     The only good thing was the food- we paid an arm & a leg to eat at the SE conference and the food was not good.    TTD had very reasonable prices and local restaurants came in & set up food tents so there were several good choices that were not outrageously priced.

#3:  The Vendor Hall:   This was also a let down.    So many vendors that I wanted to see were not there.   Christian Light was not there so I couldn’t pick up our Language Arts for next year.   See the Light wasn’t there and I had wanted to get several of their videos for Mary.   I always enjoy Tapestry of Grace & Biblioplan- neither of them were there.   Memoria Press, My Fathers World, Math U See,  Usborne Books, IEW, and Michael Clay Thompson were not there either.   :(      I did spend some time talking with Sequential Spelling and looking at their new releases and products and was super pleased.  As soon as the computer version is released in January I plan to get it- the price is great- only $30 a year for up to 5 students!   I picked up piles of construction paper at Miller Pads & Paper for super cheap and all kinds of fun things at Rainbow Resource- including Life of Fred math and handwriting for Nathan and Savannah.  No one had the devotional I wanted for next year, “Thoughts to Make Your Heart Sing” (by the same people who wrote The Jesus Storybook Bible” and no one had Beast Academy which I wanted to pick up for Nathan next year.    I did get to see The Logic of English & their Foundations program- I’ll be keeping that in the back of my mind for Savannah in case CLE’s Learning to Read isn’t successful for her.   And I got to visit a little with Sonya Shaffer from Simply Charlotte Mason and, as always, she was delightful.   Truly, she is just so gracious & pleasant- I enjoy speaking with her every  year.     Overall the vendor hall was pretty small & there just weren’t as many of the smaller companies there.

#4:  FUN Things:    First, I met Cindy from one of my favorite blogs, Get Along Home!    She was super nice & I enjoyed chatting with her for a few minutes.   Then, totally randomly, I saw a lady whose blog I’ve been reading for years & years.  Probably 6+ years- I started following her blog when they were on their way to the Ukraine to adopt a little girl.   They named her Lyra which I always loved & thought was such a pretty name- I was so glad when Kip finally agreed to let me use it for our 4th baby!     It was neat to meet the other Lyra’s mom and talk with her for a little bit.   And, to top it all off, I also got to spend a few minutes with a lady who is one of the same parenting boards I am on- it’s always nice to meet other board members in real life and she was super sweet.

#5:  Next Year:   Unless there is a big change, I doubt we’ll go back to TTD next year.   I had three different vendors tell me how much they love the CHAP convention in Pennsylvania.   Huge vending hall, great speakers AND the hours run from 8am-5pm unlike most conferences which go until 9pm or so.  I kind of like the idea of having built in free evenings- CHAP is in the Amish country so there is lots to do & I think it would make a nice get away.   We also heard good things about Virginia’s HEAV conference.   Teach Them Diligently is putting on a National Conference in Washington, DC next year.   I’d research the area, speakers & vendors carefully before committing to go to it but it’s a possibility- I don’t think we’d go back to Spartanburg but DC might be better.  Right now I’m leaning towards CHAP.

Florida Vacation- April, 2013

Saturday, April 13:  Driving down to Florida

Because Nathan had football in the morning, we could not leave until 12:30pm.   We drove for six hours, with only one stop, and got into Savannah, Ga. around 6:30pm.

Sweet Lou asleep on the way down & then playing with toys from her car trip bag.

We had a leisurely dinner at Olive Garden- can you tell they were happy to be out of the car for a while?  :)

We mistakenly thought we only had 3 hours left to our house in Kissimmee, FL (our nav system screwed up and we actually had closer to 4.5 hours left of driving- ugh!)- thinking that we were closer than we were, we took some time to head over to this gorgeous fountain in downtown Savannah- the kids loved the live music that was playing so we let them run around for a while & enjoy the evening.   Then we stopped at a gas station to fill up & put the kids in their pj’s.  We left Savannah at 9:30 pm thinking we only had 3 hours left of driving.   We did not arrive until 2:00am- we would not have stayed in Savannah that long had we known but it was still fun!

Sunday, April 14:

Monday, April 15: Family Cookout

We have a lot of family that lives at home in NY during the summer and spends the winter in Florida.   We knew we’d never have time to travel to everyone’s home for visiting so we invited the entire Fairchild family to our house for a cookout.    Several members had to work that Monday but we ended up with a pretty good group regardless.    Frank & Sarah Fairchild (married August 14, 1899) had 5 children who lived to adulthood.    My Dad & Aunt Carolyn are the children of Frank & Sarah’s son, Sam.   Agnes & Gilbert are the children of Frank & Sarah’s son, Floyd.   Alice & Pat are the daughters of Frank & Sarah’s son, Charlie.    Neither of Frank & Sarah’s daughter Eva’s children were able to make it although they both live in Florida.   We also missed my Dad & Carolyn’s brother, Charlie and some more of Alice & Pat’s siblings & kids.   We had a wonderful time- lots of visiting & looking at Agnes’ family scrapbooks- the kids swam for *hours* & were thoroughly worn out by that evening!

The Six Cousins (left to right):  Norman, Alice, Agnes, Pat, Carolyn & Gil.

Beautiful blanket Aunt Carolyn made for me- I love it!

Tuesday, April 16:  Walt Disney World- The Magic Kingdom
We got up early Tuesday morning to head to Disney World.  We spent the entire day at the Magic Kingdom- we arrived around 8:00am and did not get home from the park until 12:30am on Wednesday morning!   We could not believe how well the kids did- especially Lyra because she still naps 2-3 hours every day.   She only slept in the stroller twice, about 20 minutes each time.  However, Lyra loves, loves, loves a party and she thought Disney World was the biggest, best party ever!

Pulling the sword out of the sword in the stone!

Savannah on her favorite ride, Ariel’s Under the Sea                                               Lyra on It’s A Small World

The 3pm parade:  *THE* coolest thing happened during this parade.  Mary was standing on the sideline when the float with Mary Poppins went by- Mary Poppins saw Mary- pointed at her & shouted from the float- “Is your name Mary too?”   Mary was positively bug-eyed with excitement & hollered back “YES!”.  Mary Poppins yelled back “Me too!!  We have the same name!!”  and then blew a kiss to Mary.   I think Mary nearly fainted from excitement!    (All the kids were wearing Mickey Mouse shirts with their names on them)

Lyra, Nathan, Savannah & Mary outside the Swiss Family Robinson treehouse & then a view from the top of the treehouse.  We had watched the old movie of it the morning before so they really liked it.   We also super loved The Hall of Presidents- the figures were amazing- it was hard to believe they weren’t real.

Nathan after his favorite ride, The Pirates of the Caribbean.

The Fabulous Four:  Mary, Nathan, Savannah & Lyra in front of the castle at Disney World.

Kip took Mary & Nathan back to ride Buzz Light Year one more time while I took the little girls back to ride Ariel’s Under the Sea.  I happened to see that the line to meet Ariel was only 20 minutes.  We had not met any of the princesses because the lines were always 60+ minutes- way to long.    So we hopped in that line to meet her & the little girls were thrilled.  Then Mary was disappointed she missed it so we did it again!   One of the neat things that happened was we met this nice British family in front of us in line.  They had a 7yo boy and then 3 girls.  This boy & Nathan really buddied up- they were thoroughly, absolutely & totally disgusted at having to waste time standing in line to meet some stupid princess.  Girls! Ugh!  haha!   :-)    The whole family was very nice & we enjoyed chatting with them.

Finally, Dumbo!!!

The 11pm Electrical Parade was amazing- I am SO glad we stayed for this!!!

If you know Lyra at all, you know that she loves a party.   She was positively beaming all day- she thought Disney World was one great big party.   As you can see below, she loved the electrical parade!

Wednesday, April 17:  The Morse Museum of American Art

Wednesday morning we slept in & the kids swam in the pool.   Then, while the little girls were asleep, I took the two older kids to the Morse Museum of American Art which has the largest collection of Tiffany in the world.   I didn’t get any pictures so I’ve copied the one below from their website to give you an idea of what it was like there.   It was absolutely gorgeous.   Both of them loved it- Nathan even said when we left “Mom!  I didn’t know if I was going to like that museum but I LOVED it, it was really cool!”

Thursday, April 18: Visiting my Dad in The Villages

We got up early Thursday morning to head about an hour North West to spend the day with my Dad in The Villages.   We got to Dad’s a little after 9am.  We visited for a few minutes & then drove over to Uncle Bill & Aunt Ruthie’s house.   Uncle Bill is my grandmother’s brother- he is the last of the 12 siblings and he was her favorite brother.   Aunt Ruthie is the daughter of my grandmother’s best friend, Aunt Margery.    Aunt Margery had 4 daughters & 3 sons.   One daughter, Ruthie, married my grandmother’s younger brother, Bill.   One daughter, Greta, married my grandmother’s second son, Charles.   And another daughter, Judy, married my grandmother’s nephew, Earl (son of her older brother, Peter).      It was so wonderful to see them again.   I have not seen them since Gramma’s funeral in 11/2000, almost 13 years ago, and, of course, they had never met our children.

Aunt Ruthie fixed Lyra’s Honey Bear for her- of course, Mary was all interested in the sewing!        Then, Uncle Bill with Savvy-  I *love* this picture!

Uncle Bill with Lyra and then with all four children.

Uncle Bill & Aunt Ruthie with all four children.   Then my Dad & Sharon with all four kids.   We headed back to their house after visiting with Uncle Bill & Aunt Ruthie.  Dad took us all out to lunch at a restaurant over looking the water.   The kids loved seeing turtles, birds and one alligator.

Golf carts are a big thing in The Villages.  The kids loved riding around in these!                      Dad in front of his house at The Villages.

Dad with the big kids at Spanish Springs.                                               Enjoying the music & dancing at the square!

Friday, April 19: Gator Land

Kip said that the one thing he really wanted to do was to feed some gators so we sent to Gator Land on Friday.  I’ll admit that this was not my idea of a good time but really, it was wonderful!  I was so glad we went- we had a great time there!   Gator Land has a lot going on besides feeding gators,  there are tons of birds there, a brand new cougar exhibit, tortoises, etc.  It was really fun.

These cougars were gorgeous!    The one below was totally fixated on Lyra!  I think he thought she looked like a tasty snack!

Kids on the train.  Love this picture of cutie-pie Lyra!

Mary, Savannah & Nathan on a gator!  I put my foot down about Lyra though- I told Kip there was no way I was letting my baby do that!

They have a gator wrestling show & Nathan got chosen to participate.   There was a moat around the arena filled with alligators in it & Nathan was supposed to pick which alligator the man would wrestle.  After he picked the alligator, the man says to Nathan “Hey, Nathan, I’m kind of tired.   How about you jump down in that moat, wrestle the alligator over to the side for me and I’ll pull him up into the arena by his tail.”   Nathan say “okay!” and takes off for the moat.    The second picture below is of the man lunging for Nathan and just grabbing him before he starts to climb down into the moat with the alligators!   He said to Nathan “I was just kidding!  You weren’t going to actually get down there were you?”   Nathan looks at him like he’s nuts and says “Yeah, I was!”     Good Grief!!  I bet it’s the last time he’ll try that joke on a kid!

Mary & Nathan holding a python.  Ick!

The kids with a rare Leucistic alligator & some information about them below.

Feeding gators!

Funny picture of Mary!  :)    Friday was the hottest day while we were there- it was hot, hot, hot.   We got the kids popsicles/icecream after lunch.

These pictures are hilarious!

Saturday, April 20: Kennedy Space Center

Kids in front of Neil Armstrong’s space suit!                                                                                                                                 Lyra on a moon rover.

We were lucky that a real astronaut was there signing autographs on the day we chose to visit!   The kids got to meet Bob Crippin.  He went on four missions.  Nathan wanted to know if it was scary but Mr. Crippin assured him it was not.  :)

Fun picture of all four kids.

The kids touching a piece of the moon!

Just so you know…they were NOT tired after a long day at Kennedy Space Center!   We stayed until it closed at 5pm and then hit the road for a four hour drive North to Savannah, Ga.   We stopped for dinner & gas, etc. along the way and got to the hotel around 11pm.

It’s late & she’s exhausted but still smiling.   :-)

Elf Antics

Our elf-on-the-shelf, Jingle, got into some mischief this year! I only took a few pictures this month but he did some other fun things too, such as:

-bringing doughnuts one morning

-he had a sick day all laid up on a little bed with wadded kleenex, medicine, a thermometer and a comfy blanket

-he built snowmen (using giant marshmallows & shaving cream “snow”)

-he brought a new puzzle & got it started for the kids

-he drank maple syrup straight out of the bottle using a straw!

-he went into the closet and got the hotwheels race car track out & set it up

-he rappelled down the living room curtains

Jingle wrapped the entire toilet in Santa paper and wrote “Jingle was here” in toothpaste on the bathroom mirror!

One day Jingle brought a bag of Christmas m&m’s and wrote a message for the kids!

The play figures apparently got a little tired of his antics & captured Jingle one night!

Christmas 2012

Christmas, 2012

As usual, I am the first one awake!  Most years I am awake by 4am or so- I go downstairs, turn on the lights & Christmas music, wait around for everyone to get up and finally, when I can’t wait any longer…I get everyone up.

I’m not sure, but I think Nathan was pleased with his Nerf gun….

More zoobs!

Mary & Savannah opening their lap desks- each was full of art supplies- new markers, twistable crayons, pads of paper & coloring books.  Just what they wanted!     Mary also got a watch, a new journal, a sewing basket with new sock loom and some things for her American Girl doll.

Savvy got some My Little Ponies, a new outfit for her American Girl doll, a pot holder loom and a Snoopy Sno-Cone Machine.

Lou Lou got some puzzles, a new pocket book, a doll high chair and a new dolly.

Nathan was thrilled with his Marine Corps hat and flashlight and his long-awaited air soft pistol.

Mary with her stuffed kitty & kittens.

Christmas Eve 2012

Christmas Eve, 2012

Opening Pap Pap’s gifts:

Mary got a stenciling set!

Savannah has wanted this stained glass coloring book for ages!

Lyra loves music so Dad got her the Fisher Price Record Player- I had the same one 35ish years ago.   So fun!

Do you think Nathan was thrilled with his new book?  :)

This book is very cool- it shows how lots of different things work- from electric guitars to oil rigs to fire extinguishers, etc.   This is right up Nathan’s alley.

Christmas Eve Night- Kip’s birthday is Christmas Eve so we always invite his parents over for dinner and a birthday celebration.   After his birthday dinner of choice & presents, we clean up & then have Christmas with his parents.

A nice picture of Paw Paw & Mimi with the grandkids.

Of course, they had to do a silly picture!

The Four Little Jewells- Lyra (2yo), Nathan (7yo), Savannah (5yo) and Mary (8yo)

Opening presents from Paw Paw & Mimi.

After Paw Paw & Mimi went home, we set out reindeer food, checked out where Santa was on the computer, put on Chrismtas PJ’s and then the kids opened presents from each other.   Mary, Nathan & Savannah all bought presents for each other & Lyra.

Afterwards we hung stockings, set out cookies & milk for Santa, read our Tasha Tudor illustrated version of ‘Twas The Night Before Christmas, checked Santa’s location again & then hurried off to bed.

Christmas Crafting & Cooking

December 23-24, 2012

The children were given some Christmas foam & bead craft kits.  They spent an afternoon making little foam gingerbread houses &  men and beaded candy canes.    They loved doing this- I really wish I were better about crafting because they enjoy it so much when we do!

Lyra working on a beaded candy cane.

We discovered this book on one of our trips to the library a few years ago.  It became Nathan’s favorite Christmas book- the illustrations are super cute.  I bet we read it 10 times during the Christmas season.    Of course, all the kids just had to make Captain Cookie & his crewmen, especially Wavy and Dots.  :)

Candy cane fruit for lunch one day.

Surprise!

Kip’s Surprise 50th Birthday

12/15/12:  Kip’s birthday is Christmas Eve.  I wanted to do a surprise party for him but knew that I couldn’t do it then!  So, two weeks before his birthday, I threw him a surprise, Mexican-themed Birthday party.    Kip had NO IDEA which made it all the better!   Kip thought he was just taking Barbara to get her Christmas tree and then bringing her back to our house for dinner.   After they got her tree set up & were heading back towards our house, Barbara asked Kip if they could stop at the fire station because her friend was the secretary there & had some boxes she needed Barbara to pick up.   Barbara told Kip that the boxes were heavy and…would he mind stopping and loading them into her car for her?  Of course, he was happy to help.  He walked into the community room, expecting to find a couple of boxes on a table and instead found nearly 50 of his friends, family & neighbors.  :)

We had Mexican shredded beef, Mexican shredded chicken, tortilla bowls, all the fixings, Southwestern rice & cornbread, Tres Leches Cake and Horchata (a Mexican drink that Kip likes).   I actually meandered around the grocery store one day until I found a friendly looking Hispanic woman- I approached her & told her what I was doing & she took me straight away to the Mexican aisle and told me exactly what to buy- it was funny & she was very nice.

Mary, at the table.   Sarah’s son, Alec, in the background.

Sarah’s husband, Bob, made an entire playlist of Kip’s favorite 1970′s music & Barbara’s son-in-law took 75 pictures that I sent him of Kip’s childhood and made them into a video we had playing in the background.      It was amazing to see how much Nathan looks *exactly* like Kip- he really is Kip’s little mini-me.     (that is the video with a picture of Kip as a toddler in the background)
